wf MAJ ALLEN GOES HO) —_ He Turns Over the Indian Agency to Hi Successor. Maj. R. M. Allen, under Cleveland the Indian agent at White Earth, came down from the reservation yes- terday on his way to his home in Il- hnots, says the Pioneer Press of the 2nd inst. Maj. Allen was relieved if time ago by the appointment of J. H. Sutherland, of Detroit, and 1% completed recently the formalities of turning over the affairs of the agency to his successor. He said yes- terday that he had not been home for four years, and was glad of an oppor- tunity to return and get acquainted again, Activity ii Northern P No more conclusive proof of the improved condiuon of business and the lumber trade in particular, and the confidence that business men and capitalists have in the future, can be found than the remarkable increase in the demand for choice pine lands and the eagerness with which lumbermen and investors have been picking them up during the last three or four months. ‘his condition of affairs was noted at the time of the Minne- sota state stumpage sale a few months ago. It was also noticeable at the sale of the Wisconsin state park lands at Rhinelander in December. Everyone familiar with the lands put up at both of these sales was Surprised at the eagerness of the buyers to get hold of choice tracts, and the prices paid tor them. It has also been nouced that large tracts of timber have been bought by shrewd lumber- men and capitalists in northern Michi- gan, Wisconsin and Minnesota within six moaths, thatno one would have thought of purchasing a year ago. This activity in pine land during the last few months has been more pronounced in northern Wisconsin, where cruisérs, estimators and land lookers have been and are now out by the score in the employ of large lumber compames or capitalists who are anxious to increase their northern pine holdings. A well posted pine jand estimator and agent informs the Lumberman tbat he has not seen such activity in the years ti he his been in the pine land bas He has made thousands of dollars within the last. few months on commission is now hard at work with a] corps of experienced cruisers looking ess. and ever lands in’ the woods — ol Oneula and Vilas counties in northern | Wisconsin. ‘lhe activity has extend: | ed to northern Michigan, and hew lock and hardwood timber is not be- ing overlooked by buyers.
