McAlpine’s wife presented him with a litle son the day before Christmas. Walter V. Fuller returned from a business trip to the reservation last Wednesday. Geo. Lydick and Robt. Miss Katherine Godfrey, of Hib- bing has been spending the past week with Miss Lena Paul. She returned home yesterday morning to resume her duties in her school room . at Hibbing. Daniel Rogers resigned as Villiage Marshall, to accepta position as scaler on the reservation and the Village Council appointed Fred Collette in his place, Fred will make a good officer. The leading hotels in town gave their guests most elaborate dinners Christmas day. Quite a number of our citizens embraced the opportunity of dining outand were not disappoint- ed in their expectations: Charley Brown has received his order from the surveyor general of logs and lumber and has commenced his winter’s work. He will be empleyed in this vicinity and will make Grand Rapids his head quarters, Attorney C. L. Pratt has been in Wausau, Wis., several days this week securing affidavits to be used in a civil case the coming term of court. This is the second trip he has made to that city for the same purpose. _ A New Year’s address will be given in the Methodist church next Sunday morning by the pastor, after which there will bea love feast. All are invited. Union services will be heid in the same church in the evening. Subject: “Power in Christian Life,” by Rev. McKenzie. The members of the Epworth League, gave a social at the Gilbert home Wednesday evening. _ The house was well fillzd and a very pleas- ant evening was passed by those present. Charades were the order of the evening. Refreshments were served by the young ladies of the society. Mrs. Ehle was attending a meeting of the Associated School Boards this week in St. Paul. She attended as a representative of the Grand Rapids: school board of which she is a mem- ber. Metzger drove down from Deer River yesterday to take in the masquerade. He returned this after- noon accompanied by Roy Bell. From lettres received from Geoge Cox, who is now in Yuma, Arizona, one would infer that he is not very favorably impressed with that country, or at least with that particular town. He says it is very warm down there, the sand is shoe deep and the town being without side walks makes walking decidedly laborious. He ts at present surveying in a mine. ‘The week of prayer will be observed by the congregations of the Meth- odist and Presbyterian churches by special services each evening during the coming week. Sunday evening services will be held at the M. E. church and each evening following they will alternate between the two churches. A special invitation is ex- tended to all to attend.
