Christmas in Camp. On Christmas eve the cook of Quadnaw camp was busy with a baich of doughnuts while the cookee was peelin taters for the Christmas meal when suddenly, the cook said: “Let’s give the boys a little surprise tomorrow. ‘Three of the crew has got presents in the mail, I know it by the looks of the letters, and we wili hang them and thirty-two doughnuts on a Christmas tree so every mother’s son of em will have somethin.” By guy! that’s thestuff and I'll get you a tree just as soon as I swipe the skins off the murphies,” said Ben Simmons. In half an hour Ben toted in a four foot spruce top and stuck it into a knot hole in the big pine table. The doughnuts were set aside to cool and the cook said: “What's the name ot that there Aitkin girl that Hank gets letters from? You know, he never says much about her. He’s dead stuck on her T’ll bet. Mamie, that’s u, Mamie. © Vl string her name on one of the doughnuts. You waite it Ben and Ben you write names jor the feilers on slips for all of em.” * You bet I will,” said Ben, who was a well schooled young fellow who often wrote letters for the boys and} knew much about their personal mat- | ters. So he printed ‘Mamie’ on a neat slip of paper and Lucy on another and so on until he run’ out of those he knew the boys: were swect on and then, Well then, the cook supplied him | with pretty names that almost anyone would admire. They were stringing the doughnuts to the tree when the push came over fron, the men’s camp to fx up his wan- egan book. | He didn’t say mnch_ but he smiled a sort of a quiét smile and took about twice as long as usual to make -that pencil write down the charges tor socks and mitts and tobac- co. After the push had skinned out and turned in; his doughnut and his shp with “Maudie Meyer, Minneapolis,” whiten on it, and the three letters that had the presents, were strung upon the tree and the cock and cookee roiled toroost. Jt was a tnfle after half past four when the crew got over to the cook camp the next morning and the remindets of Christmas loosened their tongues and added the sauce of good natured joiiity to thir breakfast. lady vichaisis of the northwest. Some of them saved their doughnuts ‘ Hendry’s | 22 nee ee ci é ae for Sunday and none, of them threw}; away the little shps of paper. The push somehow found it necessary to rest most of the teams that day and he told the boys to just finish up the loose ends of work and take a lay-off for Christmas afternoon. The mail that went out of Quadinaw camp by | the next tote team was the largest the boys sent hat season and many little things were done§ for the cook-camp } after that which hadn’t been thought of before, This episode occurred about ten years ago and while the push and Maudie Meyer haye drifted far apart that other couple, Hank and Mamie, were marned at Aitkin on the} followmg Thanksgiving and they live now in Minneapolis where Hank has a good, steady job in one Fof he great saw mills of that bright and flounshing city.
