FI A-18 x New High Records Reached by Issues On D. C. Exchange Bond and Stock Prices Exceed Quotations At End of 1941 By EDWARD C. STONE. Six issues listed on the Washing- ton Stock Exchange already have sold higher in 1942 than at the end of 1941, some even being at the highest prices in several years, a survey discloses. In the bond division, Capital Trac- tion 5s, which have just sold at 105, closed 1941 at 103. However, these bonds, which are the most active on the list, show comparatively small fluctuations, very few being offered for sale at any price. Turning to stocks, Capital Transit, in reaching 22, has advanced to the highest mark in years. The 1941 high was 17 and the low 15%, and in 1940 the best price was 17% and the lowest 11. The recent ad- vance is due to the annual report which revealed earnings of $543 on the common stock in 1941, against $3.60 per share in 1940. ‘Washington Gas common also has gained about three full points so far this year. ‘Mergenthaler Linotype, now at the highest point in years, 343, closed 1941 at 263.. This stock also has revealed strength because of an unusual earnings report. Two other stocks on the list, Terminal Re- | frigerating & Warehousing Corp. | and Lanston Monotype Co., are now | fractionally higher than at the close of 1941. i Washington Railway & Electric common stock, which has just brought $600 for a single share, cannot be compared with last year as there were no sales on the board in 1941. In 1940 the stock sold at a share. It is the highest priced stock on the exchange, as well as the most tightly held, with the possible exception of Bank of Commerce & Savings. Last year it paid a $40 regular dividend and $5 extra. New Highs Feature Exchange. ‘Mergenthaler Linotype jumped to 34, on the Washington Stock Ex- change today on a 100-share turn- over, agamst the last previous sale at 317 Capltfll Transit reached 22 for the first time in several years, 100 shares changing hands at the new price. The market opened at 21%. Garfinckel preferred appeared on the board for the first time this year, 30 shares selling at 28. It closed 1941 at 271!:. Terminal Refrigerating & Ware- housing Corp. recorded a 50-share turnover at 51, unchanged. National Savings & Trust stock made its first 1942 appearance, 10 shares selling 205, up 1 point. Credit Union Elects Officers. ‘The Washington Gas Light Credit Union has elected these officers: Claude B. Johnson, president; Rob- ert H. Lewis, vice president; E. Da- vid Upton, treasurer; William F. Allen, assistant treasurer. R. W. Reamy, retiring treasurer, was elected a member of the board of directors for a two-year term. Mr. Reamy reported that 1941 was the most successful year the union ever enjoyed. A dividend of 6 per cent was declared. The union has applied to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond for the right to be an issuing agent for Defense bonds and Defense stamps, which will be offered to members and the general public. ‘The union has invested in a $500 bond for its own account. Defense Bond Sales Heavy. In his recent annual report Harry G. Meem, president of the Wash- ington Loan & Trust Co., reported that the bank had sold Defense bonds amounting to $1936,987.50 to 3,364 individuals since the bonds ‘were placed on sale last May. ‘The bank also sold $102,100 in tax anticipation notes. Mr. Meem add- ed that many of the bank’s em- NANCIAL. AL. Stock Leaders Down Fractions fo Point In Dull Trading Light Selling Keeps Most Issues Drifting To Lower Levels By VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer, NEW YORK, Jan. 20.—Ths light- est kind of selling was sufficlent to keep the general run of stock mar= ket leaders on the downgrade in today's lackadaisical proceedings. The list inclined to back water at the start and, while assorted fa- vorites eventually managed to pin on gains, declines of fractions to a point or so were to be found in most departments at the close. The ticker tape frequently did little more than stutter, with the printing of bids and offers occupy- ing a sizable amount of space. Transfers of around 400,000 shares were among the smallest for a full session since last October. Apathy of speculative and invest- ment corNingents again was blamed partly on offsetting war bulletins, persistent doubts anent taxes, price control legislation and spreading governmental controls of business and industry. Profits prospects for individual stocks were helpful but even these were clouded by rising | costs. American Tobacco directors voted | the $1 dividends on the two junior | issues recommended by President Hill, an increase of 25 cents from the | disbursement in December, but both the common and “B” stocks turned & bit soft at the last. Wall Street heard the company was considering | plans to raise funds with which to finance huge inventory acquisitions during the past year or so. Resistant were South Puerto Rico | Sugar, Cuban-American Sugar, | Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, International Harvester, J. I. Case, American Can and International Nickel. Bond Market Ragged. Many rail issues pulled out of a | morning soft spell but the bond market as a whole still had a ragged appearance. Most gains and losses | were confined to a 1-point range toward the end of the session. United States Governments yield- ed as much as !4 point in the wake of the Washington announcement a new money financing operation would be undertaken next month. |Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, Jan. 29.—The grain market regained its equilibrium to-. day, recovering some of the loss in- flicted during yesterday’s sharp price slump. Buying by processors, consuming interests and professional traders who were attracted by the lower price level helped to lift corn and rye a cent or more at times, wheat and oats fractionally and soybeans more than 3 cents. Some of the strength was associated with the fact that traders estimated that corn futures prices had slipped slightly below 85 per cent of parity, the level which the Government hopes to maintain in order to stim- | ulate livestock production. Wheat | was quoted below the price at which | the Government is offering old grain for sale. i Wheat closed unchanged to '3 higher compared with yesterda May, 1307-131; July, 1.32%-1 corn, 1-13; higher, May, 8775-88; | July, 89%-%; oats, 13-3% uUp; IVe, 'a= “ 3, lower; soybeans, 2!5-3 higher. Because of a large reserve supply, the Government had asked farmers to reduce wheat acreages. In Canada, seedings of winter wheat were expanded by 13 per cent to 756,000 acres. This acre- age, however, is small in comparison | with the large spring sown acreage. +C I Lt pt 4.50. Cent RR NJ (1) Cent Violeta 1§ Certain-teed Pr_ tCert'n-t'd P of.
