Centrally Located Health Center in Northwest Is Urged Midcity Association Is Told Death Rate Argues for Plan Declaring a “pressing need” exists for a centrally located District health center in the Northwest area bounded by Florida avenue, Eleventh street, Constitution avenue and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the Midcity Citizens’ Association last night voted to ask provision for such an institution in the immediate future. In a report offered by George A. Warren it was pointed out that this section shows the highest death rate of any in Washington and that comparative percentage figures in- dicate that among all major dis- eases this area leads ‘in every in- stance. It was also declared that at present the largest number of patients at Gallinger Hospital are residents of the section mentioned, “thereby throwing a heavy burden on Gallinger that could be relieved by a well-placed clinic,” according to Mr. Warren. Oppose Brentwood Site. A resolution was adopted asking the Federation of Citizens’ Associa- tions to reconsider its indorsement of the so-called Brentwood tract as a site for the new Abbott Voca- tional School. The location was opposed as relatively inaccessible and lacking in sidewalk and street facilities. The old Tuberculosis Hos- pital site was favored unanimously. The association reiterated its re- quest for an additfonal playground in the downtown area and com- mended the National Capital Parks and Planning Commission for pro- viding a play area at Fifth and O streets NN\W. A proposal to exempt from taxes a property occupied by the National Society of Colonial Dames of America was opposed. Oppose Child Labor Change. ‘The association opposed the bill to alter the District child labor law, the formation of a local podiatric society on the grounds that it would be monopolistic, and proposed changes in present regu- lations of the District dental pro- fession. On the motion by Dr. F. Thomas Evans the Federation was requested to conduct an investigation into the provisions and enforcement of local property condemnation regulations | with a view to revise ¢he code. This is & great help when you do like to identify, without much difficulty, the fish you have seen at first hand and know something about it. These handsome fish are from British Honduras. Although not closely related, they do resemble young pike. These little fish are a bloodthirsty lot, and possess a menacing double row of teeth in a long mouth. The daily demand for smaller fish, in order that this carnivorous ranger may thrive, is so urgent that the gar-pipe, another name for this minnow, is always roaming about in the waters, seek- ing a few more wee neighbors upon which to dine. The male in this group is four inches long and the female six. In an aquarium you must plan to treat your guests as star boarders. The reason why these fish are rather expensive to keep is that, as live bearers, they must have live fish to eat. After some time, and then quite gradually, you may induce them to take a bit of prepared food com- posed almost wholly of anirgal mat- ter. They enjoy daphnia and even infant guppies, and when these are not present, they turn upon their brethren. To have them become cannibalistic is a shock and a very WOODWARD & LOTHROP WOODWARD 10™if™F an> G STazevs O\ Eaid 3-threal Nature’s Children Mexican Top Minnow (Belonesox belizanus) expensive turn of events, when it is against our own interests.
