REAL ESTATE. Special New Paint Resists Weathering And Refains Color Dampproofing Chimney Much Simpler by Latest Method By DOROTHY DUCAS and ELIZABETH GORDON. Are the shutters on the outside of your house faded? Have you been saying to yourself or your spouse: “Guess we’ll have to do them over this spring?” Then it is time to look around for the right paint, the kind that will freshen up the ap- pearance of your house and keep it that way for some time. Paint that is used for shutters, sash, trim and other outside wood- work has to be rich and durable. The action of sun, rain and wind can take the color out of inferior paint very quickly. Be sure you get the kind of paint that is made for this purpose. One such paint we have been look- ing at is compounded by a patented process which is said to give good hiding power and lasting gloss. This process breaks up the pigment, or | coloring matter, in the paint into | very fine particles, which are uni- | formly dispersed in the vehicle, or liquid part, of the paint. No fillers are added. Fillers, say these makers, have no value as pigment, and may cause early fading of the paint. The purpose of fillers, as a substitute pig- ment, is to increase the body of the i in this special process paint, er, it is done with sufficient finely ground pure pigment instead. This paint should be thinned with not more than a quart of linseed oil and turpentine in equal parts, added to one gallon of the ready-mixed | paint. It can be used with less thin- ning, depending on the brushing| consistency. 1Its covering capacity | on smooth surfaces, such as shutters, is about 350 square feet per gallon, two coats. The paint costs $440 a gallon, $1.25 a quart and 75 cents a pint, in green, blue or special bright red; $4.05 a gallon, $1.15 a quart and 75 cents a pint in creams and white; $3.75 a gallon, $1.10 a quart and 70 cents a pint in brown, dark red, gray and black. Cheaper when bought in larger quantities, of | course. | TS | Dampproofing the Chimney. We have discussed dampness in' OPEN SUNDAY, UNDER CONSTRUCTION—Architect’s drawing of the new $35,000 building being erected at 8615 Colesville road, Silver Spring, Md., opposite the Silver Theater. The Maryland Real Estate Co. is building the structure for Silver Spring Motor Sales. 3 nearly every part of the house, but somehow it never occurred to us be- fore to mention the subject of damp- | ness in chimneys. Yet we are told that waterlogged chimney breasts and damp chimneys are a source of much complaint and people are puz- zled as to how to cure the ill. Chimneys in homes burning gas | seem to be particularly susceptible | to chimney dampness, because gas in its combustion gives off moisture, and when the weather is cold out- side the dampness can condense into water that runs down the inside | of the chimney and saturates the | soft backing-up brick used in chim- neys. ‘What to do? suggested by There is a treatment | makers of water- proofing and dampproofing com- pounds. It's a good deal of trouble, but if a trickle of water down a| chimney is present it's worth while. First, treat the flue on the outside with a transparent waterproofing | material. This material has to be spread on the same wall that con- nects the inside wall of the flue, so it can penetrate to the inside brick | of the flue. It won't change the tex- | ture of the outside wall and it keeps | outside moisture from penetrating | the brick. | Then use a coating of damp- | 11 TO 6 ‘ "SKY MEADOWS'’ One of the few remaining acreage estates in nearby Maryland’s best residential section, now being A suburban estate of charm and rapidly developed. distinction. Mellowed field stone proofing compound on the inside walls of the flue. This acts to draw the dampness already in the brick out. Then a second coat of damp- proofer is applied (giving the first coat plenty of time to dry) and after that you can redecorate if needed. Of course the inside coating must be applied on a virgin surface, which means that paint or wallpaper must be removed, if room walls are af- fected by the chimney dampness. The dampproofer itself should be used, mixed with 25 per cent naph- tha, as a prime coat for casein ‘or water paints, with two days allowed for drying before the paint is ap- plied. Before using casein paints for finishing coat, the dampproofed walls should be washed with vine- gar. Both the transparent waterproof- CHARACTERISTIC OF EVERYTHING FOR GRACIOUS LIVING d the dampproofer for inside come in pint, quart, half gal- lon and gallon sizes. The water- proofer costs from 90 cents & quart to $3 a gallon; the dampproofer from 65 cents a pint and $1.20 a quart to $3.90 a gallon. Be Ready for Fire. Escape from fire in the home is, happily, a not-too-frequent neces- sity. But escape, when it is neces- sary, is so very important that most householders feel it is well worth while to be prepared for it. ‘The major problem is escape from an upper floor. I[n an emergency, if the stairs are impassable, this means escape through a window. And for most of us the old standby of knotted sheets is too complicated and untrustworthy a device to be considered reliable. Therefore—a fire ladder. Fire ladders are on the market which make escape from a secomd- floor, or even third-floor, window easy and safe. We've run across two lately. One is made of woven, weldless lock link steel chains, to which are attached half-inch steel rods, 13 inches long at intervals of 13 inches, held in place by gal- vanized steel washers. This lad- der is kept in a metal case which is fastened to the floor directly be- neath a window. The case acts as an anchor for the ladder when it is thrown out of the window for | use. | The other ladder, made of a series | of parallel seamless steel plates | which overlap at 1'g-inch hard ma- | ple rungs and alternately fold in| and out, like an accordian, is an-| chored by means of an extension bar | which is fitted against the inside of the window sill; thus it is porta- | ble. This bar collapses into small | enough space to fit inside a trans- | parent container in which the whole | apparatus is kept, but opens out wide | enough to fit any window sill se- | curely. The folding joints of the ladder are a special feature: They | are screwed firmly into the ends of | the rungs and equipped with a| ratchet that prevents openingl further than a 180-degree angle. The connecting chain between ex- tension bar and ladder joints is long enough to permit ample ex- tension over the window sill, even if it is an unusually wide one, so residence of Colonial design; 11 delightful, well-proportioned rooms; 3 baths; 2 servants’ rooms and bath; barn and playhouse; several acres in gardens and beautifully landscaped grounds, rich in trees and view. The steel chain ladder comes in lengths ranging from 20 feet to 100 feet, costing from $18.50, including the case, up to $60. A 20-foot lad- der is quite long enough to afford escape from a second-story window in a private residence, even when measured from the floor inside the room, up and over the window sill. The jointed steel and maple rung ladder costs $2250 for a two-story ladder, measuring 15% feet; $30 for one meant for third-story use, which measures 25 feet.
