REAL ESTATE. Attractive Home At Low Cost Aim Of Architect Cape Cod Influence Noted in Design Planned for Star The small home illustrated here is designed to give families in moderate circumstances an attrac- tive home at low cost, yet to pro- vidé them with accommodations usually found only in more expen- sive houses. It was planned for ‘The Star by John K. Cross, archi- tect, of 4628 Forty-third place, a member of the Washington Metro- politan Section of the Maryland Society of Architects, which is co- operating in presenting this series of house plans. Mr. Cross estimates the house can be built in the suburban area of Washington for about $6.200, ex- cluding cost of ground. This price has been carefully checked by a reputable home builder, and is ac- curate if erected in accordance with specifications outlined here. The house shows Cape Cod in- fluence, yet it makes use of modern materials and planning. Its style is favorable to low-cost construction and with proper handling in de- sign, has a very quaint appearance. The roofs brought close to the ground have an informal feeling, express shelter and give it a warm, inviting look. Floor plans show a thorough analysis of housekeeping problems, and the disposition of limited space to best advantage. Kitchen at Front of House. The kitchen has been placed at | the front of the house for easy access to the front door and to the | service entrance which has been | placed near the garage door. En- | trance to garage and Kkitchen are both protected from the weather. Space at the rear of the house has been reserved for living and| . dining in privacy, and also to over- look the garden area. The combined living and dining spaces add materi- ally to the feeling of spaciousness 1n both rooms without any increase | in floor area. The living space has a large fire- place located in a corner to itself, 80 as to be removed from any circu- lation lane. This entire end of lhe‘ living space is paneled with ponde. A three-drawer case, with a small table the same height beside it and a tier of shelves above will give you a working‘unit that will take care of the household accounts, the cook books and menu maker and all the garden catalogues. With tele- phone at hand you can almost run the house from this small office, and save those frantic moments when you know you paid the farmer for the ducklings he brought at Easter, but can't find the receipt and the report cards and birth cer- tificates that were misplaced and are on the verge of upsetting the house for such things.
