C, MONDAY, EXPORTS FORGE ABOVE IMPORTS Heavy Sales of American Goods Abroad During October Cited. By the Associated Press. A heavy movement of American goods abroad in Octuber, the Com- merce Department announced today, gave the United States today an excess of exports over imports for the year to date. Starting the month with a $50,000,- 000 import balance for the year, this country exported enough during Oc- tober to give a $60,443,000 export balance for the first 10 months of the year. At the same time last year, the export balance was only .$18,783,000. October exports totaled $333,136,000, the most for any month since March, 1930. The sum was 12 per cent more than in September and 26 per cent more than in October, 1936. Imports, meanwhile, declined 4 per cent from September to $224,391,000. This was 6 per cent larger than in October, 1936. This year’s improved crop conditions played an important part in the turn of foreign trade, the Commerce De- partment said. While last year, drought reduced American farm ex- ports and increased farm imports, last month’s big export total was made up largely of shipments of wheat, apples, dry fruit and cotton. Exports of in- dustrial machinery reached the highest figure since May, 1930, and other ex- port increases were credited to iron and steel products and automobiles. | Exports of a few items such as leaf tobacco, motor fuel, wood pulp and naval stores declined. Imports of far.. products, which had increased since last year's drought to $45,000,000 in June, declined in October to less than $19,000,000. The volume of foreign corn coming into this country showed one of the most important drops. The Commerce Department esti- mated American exports in the first 10 months of the year totaled $2,712,- 426,000, compared with $1.999,814,000 in the same perfod last year. Imports this year aggregated $2,651,983,000, compared with $1,981,031,000 last year. By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, Nov. 29.—Steel buy- ing in November was 10 to 15 per cent lower than in October, the maga- zine Steel said today. Much of the dearth of buying was attributed to the fact that consumers had sufficient inventories to meet re- duced demands for their products: If railroad and automotive needs were at the usual rate for this time of year steel sales would be prac- tically normal, the weekly review said X ‘Week-end idleness caused by the Thanksgiving holiday caused a drop in the national production rate last week of 3.5 points to 31.5 per cent of capacity. Increased production, however, was caused in some centers by an accumu- lation of small orders, Cleveland in- creasing 13 points to 28 per cent, Chicago, 2.5 to 30; Cincinnati, 4 to 29, and St. Louis, 5.6 to 20.6, while | Birmingham remained unchanged at | 54 per cent. Reductions included Pittsburgh, 7 points to 27 per cent; Eastern Penn- sylvania, 8 to 2 37, Wheeling, 8 to 35; Buffalo, 7 to 21; New England, 3 to 27, and De- troit, 12 to 59. NEW YORK, NDV 29 (P).—Opera- tions in the steel industry for the current week declined 1.4 points to 29.6 per cent of capacity, the lowest point in the past three years, and com- pared with 31.0 per cent last week, the American Iron & Steel Institute estimated today. A month ago operations averaged 48.6 per cent, while a year ago the rate was 75.9 per cent of capacity. The rate was last under the cu-rent figure in the week of December 3, 1934, when i was 28 per cent. Trade circles said one of the prin- cipal facters in the further weakening of the operating rate, which has been under way since Labor Day, was the failure of automobile manufacturers to take steel in the quantities expected earlier in the year.
