Below was the Kavuru vil- lage, snuggling at the foot of the giant escarpment. Tarzan and Brown were not interested in the vil- lage, but in the canyon where lay the temple of Kavandavanda, " DAN DUNN. Aroused by the drone of the motor, Kavuru war- riors gathered in the main street of the village, casting their eyes aloft. ‘“The dead men fly!" one whispered in awed tones, for he believed the ma- chine was driven by the aviators they had killed, now come to life, Brown guided the ship above the lofty escarpment and t jutting cliffs. Below them now, in the valley, lay Kavandavanda's temple, their objective. He had just climbed down from a neighboring tree. “Where do you suppose that fel- low is going?” u‘om cub, a3 they &/ | leaned over from their perch to see better. “Perhaps he is looking for an- other tree,” replied the other cub. “Wouldn't it be funny if he should climb this tree?” said the first. “I guess he would climb' down again when he found us up here,” replied the other. “He is heading right this way,” said the first. It was true. waddling along in his slow " fash- ion straight for the tree in which the cubs were perched. Sure of this now, they looked at each other & bit uneasily. Som Prickly Porky Prickly Porky was looked bigger now than he had when he was in one tree and they in an- other. They hastily scrambled down a little way, that they might see him better. Perhaps he didn't intend to climb their tree at all. Perhaps he was just going to go past it to an- other tree. Not once did Prickly Porky look up. He waddled along in his slow and awkward fashion, and so pres- ently came to the foot of the tree in which ‘were the cubs. He was still talking to himself, fretfully. He stopped at the foot of the tree and seemed to be trying to make up his mind. AT & time, & very long time, e it seemed to the cubs, he seemed to reach a decision. He stood up, hooked his claws “into the bark of the tree and began to climb. The twins looked at each other !n consternation. This wasn't funny, after all. What to do? They couldn’t get out of that tree without passing close to this fellow now climbing up, and somehow, despite their boast- ing, they were afraid to do that. Besides, hadn’t Mother Bear told them not to leave that tree? They looked at each other, and each saw the look of Iright in the eyes of the other. Then they looked down at Prickly Porky. He was climbing, slowly to be sure, but climbing. “Go away.” cried one little Bear in a voice that he tried to make sound bold, but which didn’t sound bold at all. “This is our tree,” added the other, in just the same sort of voice. Prickly Porky stopped and looked up. But the eyes of Prickly Porky are dull. He does not have to use them enough to keep them bright and sharp. He failed to see the cubs. “What is that?” he demanded, fretfully. “It's us! This is our tree!” cho- rused ,the cubs. You see, they were :luttl s lot of people when they fof the voices that it could not b‘ 1 ~ ) said, “It's us.” thing. If they had said that they were Mother Bear's cubs, that would have meant something to Prickly Porky. I have an idea that he would have gone into reverse and gone down that tree much faster than he had come up. As it was, he didn't know who “us” was, and he didnt see the cubs. So he kept right on with his slow upward climb. It wasn’t often that he was interfered with by anybody. He had decided to climb this tree, and he was going to climb it, no matter who might be up above him. You see, he knew by the sound | That didn't mean a anybody he need have any fear of. The cubs turned and scrambled up to their former position. They were worried. Truth to tell, they were frightened. This fellow might be slow and clumsy, but he was bigger than they had thought he was, and he was persistent. Moreover, there was some= thing queer about him. The cubs climbed higher. They realized now that they were trapped, and it was rather a dreadful feeling. It always is, this feeling of being trapped. They could go so high and no highers What if he should keep on coming up? It was a dreadful thcught. (Copyright, 1937.) /-
