Bales of 56 wholesale firms in the fifth district in June totaled $4.563.- 383, as compared with $3.980.264 in June, 1936, a gain of 14.7 per cent. sccording to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond's latest review. Retail sales in 52 department stores during the same period amounted to $9,829,289 in comparison with $9.323,- 116 in June, 1936, and a gain of 54 per cent. The gain in Washington of only 03 per cent prevented the general average for the rest of the district from being considerably high- er, the review said. ‘The most striking percentage im- provement was in tae value of build- ing contracts awarded in Juue in this territory. Value of such con- tracts was $40.321,000. against $22,- 187,100 in June, 1936, or a bound upward of 81.7 per cent. Building permits awarded, however, which totaled $7,602,196 in 31 cities, were 11 per cent lower than in the corre- sponding month a year ago, the bank report say Fewer Failures, Liabilities Up. Cotton consumption of 314,599 bales was 17 per cent ahead of June a year ago, while a total of 31,560,000 tons of soft coal mined was 8 per cent better than the amount mined a year ago. There were 37 business failures against 40 a year ago, making a drop of 7.5 per cent, but labilities amounted to $442,000 against $266.000 in June, 1936, an increase of 67 per cent. Debits to individual accounts in 24 cities totaled $1,358,798.000, which compared with $1,230,333,000 in June of last year and a gain of nearly 10 per cent. Debits were also about 8 per cent higher than in May of this year. All but on of the 24 cities re- ported higher debits than in June, 1936. Washington, with a gain of 19 per cent, made the largest gain n\er the May. 1937, figures. while Columbia, 8. C. with a 37 per cent ad\an(‘?. topped the other cities in gains over June, 1936. Discounts continued to increase moderately the Reserve Bank of Richmond d J the adds, and for one day, July 14, totaled more than $1,000,000 for time in several years reserve deposits declined between June 15 and July 15. Loans and Discounts Off. Loans and discounts at 41 reporting member banks declined and invest- ments in securities dropped between June 16 and Julv 14. Deposits also decreased. In compafison with fig- ures on July 15, 1936, those for July 14 this year show increases of $35,- 759,000 1in loans, $31,161,000 in de- mand deposits and deposits, while investments in curities declined by $29,958,000. Details from the report show that 10 mutual savings banks in Baltimore had deposits totaling $217,192,727 on June 30, 1937, an increase of four- tenths of 1 per cent over $216,298,343 on May 31, 1937, and a rise of 3.7 per cent above $209,362,668 on June 30, 1936. The deposits figure for June 30 this year was the highest on record in these banks. The District of Columbia reported 3.304 registrations of new passenger automobiles in June this year, against 4,014 in June a year ago, a drop of over 17 per cent. Registrations for the first six months of this year num- bered 16,719. against 18,387 in the first half of 1936, a slump this year of 9 per cent. CHICAGO, August 4.—Liquid Car- bonic Corp. reported net income for the nine months ended June 30 to- taled $1,050,615, or $1.50 a share on stock now outstanding, compared with an adjusted figure of $612,288 for the corresponding period a year ago.
