An encouraging building construc- tion picture for Washington and the surrounding metropolitan area was reported today by H. A. Johns, man- ager of the F. W. Dodge Corp.’s of- fice here. A summary of the cor- poration’s daily construction news | during the first half of this year shows that strong gains have been set up by all classifications of build- ing construction. Contracts for the construction of residential buildings in the Washing- ton area, which includes the District of Columbia, Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia and Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Mary- land, advanced to & point 68 per cent over the contracts awarded in those months of last year. The total for the 1937 period is $30,354,900. Last year this amounted to $18,121,700. Residential work in the single month of June, 1937, totaled $3,032,700. ‘The Washington gain in residential work is particularly significant in view of the smaller gain which has been recorded as an average for the 37 States east of the Rocky Moun- tains. During the first six months residential construction in this broad- er area was about 54 per cent ahead of the same months of 1936. Non-residential construction moved from last year's six-month figure of $16,752,700 to $20,839.200 at the end of that period in 1937. This consti- tutes a rise of 24 per cent. In a grouping of all private Wash- ington construction activities, the 1937 six-month total stands at $34,- 595,700, & gain of 47 per cent over the same total in 1936, $23,532,000. At the same time, private activities far exceeded the public building expendi- tures, which amounted to $21,183,500, An unusual opportu buyer to acquire a surroundings and co 927 15th St. FOXHALL VILLAGE PROPER 1550 44th STREET N.W. Total construction in Washington, including all private and all public work, has made a gain of 40 per cent over last year's six-month period. The current total of $55,779,200 com- pares very favorably with that of last year, $39,816,100. This percentage of gain in Washington exceeds the average gain of 21 per cent which has been recorded for the 37 Eastern States. Children Like Bright Colors. Children of school age have a prefer- ence for blue over red, surveys show. Yellow runs third in favor, and green is preferred over white. Inasmuch as children have such a decided liking for the primary or brilliant colors, it is well to keep it in mind when plan- ning the painting of children's rooms. As children develop, their preference changes toward the subdued or less gay colors, further tests reveal. C—-3 EDUCATION EXHIBITS OF F. H. A.
