A—16 LT FINANCIAL. OUTPUT MOUNTS Weekly Records During June Broke Peaks Reached Here Last Winter. BY EDWARD C. STONE. J. F. Fogarty, president of the North American Co., in his quarterly report on the electric output of sub- sidiaries, states that the Potomac Elec- tric Power Co. established new weekly . output records in June, exceeding the previous peak, which was attain- ed last Winter. Reporting for all the company’s subs idiaries, he added: Electric output of subsidiaries for the first half of 1937 and for the 12 months ended June 30 broke all records of present subsidiaries for half-year and 12- month periods. On the basis of preliminary figures, sutput for the second quarter of 1937 was more than 11 per cent above that for the corresponding period of 1936, and was within 11 per cent of the output for the first quarter, which was the all-time peak. The total output figures for the sub- xidiaries for corresponding periods of 1936 and 1937 were 1 1936, Increase. Industry Near Record. The U. S. Chamber of Commerce re- ports that in the United States the frst six months of 1937 were char- acterized by industrial activity greater than in any other half year, except the first six months of 1929. Activity during these months of 1937 reached its high point, however, in March, holding in the aggregate to this level during the following months, despite the unfavorable influence of labor dis- turbances and acverse legislative pro- posals. If these adverse influences had not been in operation it is clear that there would have been a steady rise in industrial activity during the months following March. Midsummer is a season when indus- trial activity as a whole may hesitate for a period or may, as last year and the year before, pause briefly, and then strengthen gradually into November. Conditions this Summer are favorable to the latter course, the survey states. Seaboard Stock on Market. All but 125 of the 5,200 national banks in the United States have al- ready acted to terminate liability for 100 per cent assessment on the com- mon stocks, Controller O'Connor re- ports.
