SPORTS. THE Esposa Scores in Brandywine : DARK HOPE SECOND' INTWO-PLY UPSET Talent Takes Big Beatlng in Contest of Handicap Stars at Delaware. B the Associated Press WILMINGTON, Del, July 3.—Es- posa, a 5-year-old mare which hadn't showed much in the way of winning form for nearly a year, ran one of her good races today in carrying William Ziegler, jr.s silks to victory in the $7,500 Brandywine Handicap at Dela- ware Park, America’s newest race track. Meeting eight leaders of the handi- eap division at her favorite distance of a mile and a sixteenth, the chestnut daughter of Espino drove home a head in front of J. W. Y. Martin’s Dark Hope, much to the sorrow of the favorite players. In fact, the talent received little consolation from either of the first two horses, for Esposa paid $26.20 to win and Dark Hope $10.20 to place. Calumet’s Streak Broken. 'HREE lengths back in third place tralled E. K. Bryson's Calumet | Dick, winner of four straight races, tncluding the Dixie Handicap, and the favorite of the crowd. Behind him came A. T. Partridge’s Conte, H. C McGehee's Fair Knightess, Walter M. Jeffords’ Jean Bart, E. R. Bradley's Bootless, William du Pont, jr.'s Gold Seeker, and Cleveland Putman’s Moon Bide. In winning the purse of $6,650, Es- posa never was farther back than third as Fair Knightess set the early pace. She was second until sup- planted by Dark Hope at the three- quarter pole and still was in third position when Martin's standard bearer assumed a slight lead over Mc- Gehee's filly at the top of the stretch Fair Knightess back, however, and Esposa and Dark Hope hooked up in a duel through the last three-sixteenths of a mile Applying his whip vigorously, Nick ‘Wall got Esposa up in the final stride. Calumet Dick closed fast after being shuffled back going to the first turn but was unable to seriously menace the two leaders, Delaware Park Results PIRST RACE—Purse. 2.vear-olds: 5 furlones. Va, July 3.—A near-capacity crowd of 7.000 turned out to witness the last Saturday's racing of |a 32-day meet conducted by the Charles Town Jockey Club here today. They saw A. E. Pierce’s Trixie Lass, with Sammy Palumbo in the saddle, run a smashing race to defeat seven of the best horses on the grounds in winning the Myrtlewood, best offering of the afternoon. Trixie Lass raced over the Charles Town course in 1:15%;, setting a track record. The former record of 1:16'5 was held by Timber Lady. Trene’s Bob Fades. \OFF rather poorly, Trixie Lass had to follow the sizzling early pace set by Irene's Bob. When the field hit the half-mile pole, Palumbo set | sail for the leaders and caught the | tiring pacemaker nearing the finish line to score by two lengths. | Irene’s Bob managed to save the | place from Edith Walker. | The race enabled Palumbo to round |out a triple for the day and record | his fifty-first score for the meeting. A large daily double pay-off resulted when those who coupled Surry and | Aella collected $371 each. | Jockey C. He drove Calumet Epson, a bay mare, owned by N. A. Rice of Baltimore, Md., third in the first heat, seeond in the Dext and first in the final. Because of the lateness of the program the Jjudges awarded the trophy to Parshall without racing another heat. Favorites captured most of the day’s evenls. Peter Son, a son of Peter Volo, and driven by Vic Fleming started off with the only straight heat win for the afternoon in the first race on the $500: claim- ! i, miles 6.10 & purse of $400. SUN ANTIOCH tired toward the end of his race last week, but is in better shape now as a result of that effort. MELODY MAID will be the most dangerous contender and the top one can make no mis- takes if he wants to beat this one. TOWNSMAN is safe for third. THIRD RACE—ROYAL REIGH, BETTY VIC, NONAVE. ROYAL REIGH would have won his race here the other day if he had had any luck at all. He is the day’s best bet. BETTY VIC has lots of speed now but won't be able to stay up with the top one. NONAVE can beat the rest. FOURTH RACE—BLACK BOO, PROXIMITY, SAMAKOV. BLACK BOO gets the call to capture this fourth offering, on the basis of rapid improvement in re- cent efforts. PROXIMITY is in top shape and has a chance to up- st the dope. SAMAKOV will hold on long enough for the third aplit. FIFTH RACE-RECORDER, DAUBER, PASTEURIZED. RECORDER comes to this track after a nice win at Aqueduct over some very good youngsters. DAUB- ER is fast enough to get the second split of the added money. PAS- TEURIZED is stepping up a bit, but can clinch third honors. 8IXYH RACE—CARVOLA, TA- BITHA, ZAY. The filly, CARVOLA, gets the call to trim this fleld of ladies be- cause she has been brought along to top form since arriving at this track. - TABITHA is well placed and stands a fine chance of taking the place award away from the highly-touted ZAY. SEVENTH RACE — DEPARTED, SHEATHE, DONA DULCIN. DEPARTED turned in a sparkling workout here the other day and in- dicated that he is all primed for a win at this distance. SHEATHE is in nicely and will be battling it out through the stretch with DONA DULCIN. EIGHTH RACE—LONGFUL, PE- TARD, MORE PEP. ‘The closing offering is a mile and an eighth affair and an open race is in prospect. LONGFUL is fond of these marathons and gets the call to outlast the fleld for the prize. PETARD is in fine form now and can make the test inter- esting.
