SCHICKRITES 10BE WEDNESDAY Funeral Services for Razor Magnate Will Be Held in Montreal. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 3.—Col. Jacob Schick. 59, died here today, less than & month after he was cited to Con- gress for forming a foreign corpora- tion to reduce Federal taxes on a for- tune made from an electric razor he invented. Col. Schick, who became a Caradian citizen in 1935, had been ill six months. Death followed an operation for re- moval of a kidney, February 23. He returned to the hospital May 23. He entered the American Army as & private in 1898, and was retired with & rank of lieutenant colonel in 1919 for disability in line of duty. In England during the war he de- veloped a device to expedite the filling of gas masks. After his retirement he turned his inventiveness to private industry. From a pencil sharpener he realized several thousand dollars, which he used to develop a magazine razor and later the electric dry shaver. As late as 1931 he established a fac- tory employing fewer than 100 per- sons in Stamford, Conn. Today the company employs 1,500 people there and also maintains a factory and lab- oratory at St. Johns, Quebec. He established his residence in Montreal in 1935. Before the con- gressional committee investigating tax evasion, Elmer L. Irey, Treasury in- vestigator, said that Schick, after be- coming a Canadian citizen, trans- ferred 57,791 shares of stock in his company to Bahamas corporations. His Montreal attorneys said today: “Canada was more favorable than the United States both for the pres- ervation of his health and also for the location of a laboratory for fur- ther research and experiments.” He became a Canadian citizen, the attorneys said, “in accordance with the Canadian laws,” an “all taxes pay- able * * * to the United States Gov- ernment have been paid or are in Process of being paid.” Funeral services for Col Schick will be held in Montreal Wednesday. Roosevelt, jr., and his bride, the former Ethel du Pont, arrived here early tonight. Capt. Franklin Calder, caretaker of President Roosevelt's Summer home on the island, announced they had arrived but refused to give any further information. The honeymooners boarded a ferry which was held for them at Lubec, then went directly to the President’s mother’s Summer home. Young Roosevelt, before boarding the ferry at Lubec, said they expected to remain on the island a week or “maybe more.” President Roosevelt’s Summer home is near his mother's. Mrs. Roosevelt, jr, wore a sports suit. Her husband wore a brown traveling suit. Both were in high spirits, elated, they said, at the pros- pect of escaping from city din. Advised of excellent game fishing in the vicinity, Roosevelt said he would spend much of the time pollock fishing. He added he expected his brother James, eldest son of the President, to arrive at the island some time soon with a yachting party. Bids for construction of the new model ship testing busin at Carderock, Md.. near Cabin John Bridge, will be opened at 11 a.m. July 21 in the Bureau of Yards and Docks, the Navy Department announced yesterday. | Specifications and drawings are in the hands of prospective contractors, officials said. There are 141 sheets of drawings alone, as the Navy is calling for several alternative propo- sitions. . Opening of the bids will be another | chapter in the Navy's long fight to | procure a modern basin to replace the obsolete one at the Washington | Navy Yard. The administration is | preparing to build up a modern mer- chant marine, and the new basin will play an important part in vhm; activity, as well as in the development | of Navy vessels. Desirable rock-bottom conditions | prevailing at Carderock are considered a ruling factor in the Navy's decision ' to locate there. This, officials said yesterday, will insure proper stability, as well as minimize leakage of water from testing tanks. Further, an ade- quate supply of pure water for the development is obtainable at Carde- rock, as the Washington water supply | conduits pass the site. | Already the Navy Department is, lining up inspectors to supervise the job.| Thase will include naval officers and experienced civilian engineers, who will check the contractor on every phase of construction. The cost of the development is ex- petced to be about $3.500.000, and the about 45 per cent will represent the cost. of labor at the site. This means many additional jobs for persons in this vicinity | In addition to testing models of sur- | ace craft. the new basin will be util- | zed for studies on seaplanes and am- phibians, the Bureau of Aeronautics, being interested in this phase of the work. | Construction of the basin, officials | said, will insure that the United States | will be able to keep pace with the Euro- pean nations in facilities for investi- gating new characteristics of vessels, | both of the Navy and the merchant| | marine. | | | 0’MEARA FUNERAL RITES TOMORROW Services to Be Held at 9 A.M. in St. Francis de Sales’ Church.
