CRONKHITE DIES IN FLORIDA Retired Officer Had Distin- guished Record as Divi- sion Commander. By the Associated Press ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., June 15.— Maj. Gen. Adelbert Cronkhite, 76, U. S. Army, retired, died at a hospital here today, following an illness of a week, He had been suffering from a kidney ailment and was reported improved several days ago, but developed pneu- monia and last night was placed un- der an oxygen tent. Maj. Gen. Cronkhite's career, includ- ing service in France during the World War, where he won unusual honors, was marked by a dispute with the War Department after he had spent con- siderable time attempting to solve the shooting of a son, Ma). Alexander Pen- nington Cronkhite. Killed on Practice March, The major was killed on a practice march while leading a detail through a wooded section of the Camp Lewis, Wash,, reservation. The finding noted on his record was that he accidentally shot himself. Gen. Cronkhite did not believe his son had dled in any such manner. In- vestigations he personally conducted revealed certain irregularities, and he sought help from the War and Justice Departments. Two men who had been GEN. ADELBERT CRONKHITE. with Maj. Chonkhite on the march finally were arrested, and one of them | confessed he killed the major, naming the other as the instigator. He then repudiated the confession. Neither was convicted. this life on Mondayv. June 14. 1937, a prief iliness. GEORGE RICHARD | WALTON. husband of Mechtilde Bow- man Waiton: son of Barriteer L. IDA_AND ADA @dar Hill So completely did the general throw himself into the fight to clear his son’s record that he found himself | in_trouble with the War Department. | Officials ordered him to Panama, but | he asked permission to remain in the | United States and continue his in- vestigations. Several Extensions Granted. Several extensions were granted, but the War Department flatly de- clined to allow all the time Gen. Cronkhite said he needed. He then was invited to retire and refused, giving for his reason that he had served his country *“with un- blemished record for over 40 years"; had participated in three wars; and had commanded the 80th Division as well as the 9th and 6th Army corps in France. Nevertheless he was retired from active service. He declared in a letter {to the adjutant general that he had been done a ‘“gross injustice,” and for a time a congressional investiga- tion was threatened. Gen. Cronkhite was born January 5, 1861, in Litchfield. N. Y., and was graduated from the Military Academy in 1882. He served in the Indian and | Spanish-American Wars, and after training at Camp Lee, Va. took the 80th Division to France. It was the | only American division to be called into the line three separate times during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. DEFENDS HOME BREW HUGO, Okla., June 15 (#).—Federal Judge Edgar S.
