Citizen Tells Consul He Has Little Hope of Escaping Ax. Br the Associated Press. BERLIN, April 24 —Helmuth Hirsch, 21-year-old condemned Jew, for whom United States Consular authorities have interceded, appeared resigned to- night to die for what he considered a “cause”—a reported plan to assassi- nate a high German, possibly Adolt Hitler. ‘ Hirsch, whose status is that of a United States citizen because his grandfather was a naturalized Ameri- can, talked in Ploetzensee Prison today with United States Consul Raymond H. Geist. He told the American offi- cial he had no hope of escaping the death penalty, despite an appeal for clemency to German authorities by his attorney. The German prosecutor declined to divulge the exact nature of Hirsch's alleged offense. But informed sources said the death sentence had been pro- nounced on charges he intended to use explosives in an attempt to assassinate a high government official, presumably Hitler. These sources also expressed belief that a recent speech by Col. Gen. Her- mann Wilhelm Goering, warning against terroristic activities, pointed to Hirsch, The Reich’s air minister on March 16 warned those who “believe, perhaps, as a last resort, that they can over- power Germany by murder or cowardly assassinations.” “Woe to him who there plays with fire,” Goering said. “Not only he, not only a number—all those who are of this view and this spirit will burn to cinders!” Hitler has not yet Hirsch’s clemency plea The United States Consul entered the case after it was learned Hirsch —_— considered Zurhnrfit ' Funeral Directors (C. 8.
