B the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 5.—Prices crept higher in the bond market today @s trading dwindled noticeably. Many customarily active loans failed to open in the forenoon and some which did come out showed only one or two sales. Nevertheless the major trend was upward for all sections ex- cept rails and United States Govern- ments. These issues were lower for the most part. Northwestern 43,s. Southern Rail- way 4s and “Katy” 5s lowered a bit. Nickel Plate 4!3s, Prisco 4'¢s and Bal- timore & Ohio 4!5s rose slightly. United States Governments met set- backs ranging to 7-32 of & point. Brazilian and Colombian obligations | moved up a point or so to lend color to & pallid foreign list. Most active issues in this group were little higher. Egg Prices Drop 1 to 2 Cents, With Supplies Climbing ® the Associated Press. CHICAGO. January 5—Egg prices tumbled 1 to 2 cents a dozen in Chicago todayr as supplies exceeded expectations. Heavy selling of egg futures re- | sulted in the sharpest break in re- frigerator standards since last Feb- | ruary. January deliveries of stand-{ ards broke to 23';, compared with yesterday's 2475 close. At one time | January eggs sold as low as 327s. Fresh eggs for spot delivery lost 1 to 1!2 cents. Fresh graded extra | firsts were quoted down to 27', cents a dozen. Traders attributed the markdown | in futures partly to a contraction in demand for freezer stocks which are in competition with fresh eggs. Re- ceipts of the latter were heavy de- &pite colder weather. Washington Exchange‘ SALES. ‘Woodward & Lothrop common—25 at | 8. AFTER CALL. By the Associated Press. NORFOLK, Va., January 5.—Steady improvement in operating revenues pointed today toward a possible early termination of the receivership of the Norfolk Southern Railroad. Judge Luther B. Way of Federal District Court, announced that Morris S. Hawkins and L. H. Windholtz, re- ceivers, were completing a plan that would be outlined at future hearin, dates for which have not been set. The line has been in receivership since July 28, 1932, when Windholtz and George R. Loyall, former presi- dent of the company, took charge under an order of Judge Way, en- tered at the request of the Fruit Growers Express Co. Hawkins later succeeded Loyall as co-receiver. Operating revenues of the road for 1936 were $4,366,000, providing $366,- 000 for fixed charges. The company’s funded debt totaled $16,637,000 on December 31, 1935, with annual charges of $819,627. Additional fixed charges included $9,000 rent on the Atlantic & North Carolina line and $83,500 on the Durham & South Carolina line. Improved financial conditions of the Seaboard Air Line Railway, which has been in the hands of receivers since December, 1930, likewise may H lead to the lifting of its receivership. Judge Way has called a conference of bondholders, stockhoiders and creditors to discuss the question here January 19. The sustained upturn in commodity wholesale prices which began in Oc- tober continued in the week ended January 2. according to the index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association. This index rose last week to 84 per cent of the 1926-1928 aver- age, a new high point for the recov- ery period and compared with 83.1 in the preceding week, 81.8 a month ago and 78.5 a year ago. None of the group or subgroup in- dexes declined during the week, in- dicating the broad nature of the up- ward movement. The indexes repre- senting the prices of foods, farm products, textiles, metals, building ma- terials and fertilizer materials were at the highest points yet reached in the entire recovery period. Food prices generally were higher during the week, with 15 items included in this group moving upward and only | four declining. ‘With the exception of oats and eggs all price changes in the farm product group were upward, with the cotton, grain and live stock indexes advanc- ing rather sharply. With cotton, certain cotton goods, wool, burlap and silk advancing in price, the textile index registered the twelfth consecutive weekly advance. Arise in finished steel prices was responsible for the marked upturn in the metal price index. Reflecting higher prices for structural steel, Southern pine and oak flooring, the | building material index advanced 3 per cent during the week. NEW YORK, January 5—Presi- dent Roosevelt's forthcoming budget message to Congress is waited in financial circles for a cue on Wash- ington’s need for new borrowing over the next year. With millions of dollars about to start flowing into the Treasury from collection of social security taxes, Government revenues are slated fo take another spurt. March tax col- lections will show revenue-producing results of 1936 business recovery and the Federal levy on undivided. cor- porate profits. Between them, these soufces are counted upon to reduce need for new funds considerably, However, in the absence of rapid reduction in relief expenditures, bond men figure a “technical balance” of the budget—meaning by that inclu- sion of social security tax collections into general Treasury funds as a contribution to reduced borrowing— | is not in sight, at the earliest, until some time in the next fiscal year, starting July 1. ‘The sweep of business recovery since the adjournment of the last sesa sion of Congress, of course, leads many to expect waning enthusiasm for further economic reforms in the new Congress lest the uptrend be impeded. Nevertheless, the labor situation, S§. E. C. investment trust inquiry, taxes and relief spending are among | pending problems holding out pros- pect of more legislation directly touching business, FAILURES TOTAL RISES.
