DAILY SHORT STO! RET URN By Frank Kern Levin. ERE were many people fn the room at & home in Chevy Chase, making it seem smaller than #t was. The radio was turned to full- est capacity and there was too much light from the three large chandeliers. Mar- tin was alert among them, nod- ded with one and another and said hello and moved across the room as one of their kind at last and greeted the hostess. She said: “We're s0 glad to see you. Mr. Won- trow spoke of you at breakfast. He's ® pleased that Fou're doing so well.” “Thank you, Mrs. Wontrow. A fel- low can't help doing well working for & man like your husband,” Martin said. “Have you met my niece, Marilyn? You know, I really shouldn’t be tell- ing, should I, but this really is a party celebrating her engagement to Count Runlitz of the Washington diplomatic circle.” The girl turned and, when she faced Martin, exclaimed: “But we've met. Just last week at uncle's office. I want %o thank you again for running me over to the hairdreaser’s. It was so helptul.” The people were moving about and around. Some in the center of the floor were dancing. A few of them, the stout men with large cigars in their mouths and wearing colored shirts, were standing in one place. ‘They spoke rapidly and looked wisely &t one another as prominent busi- hess men sometimes are given to do. “Your aunt was telling me—" Martin began. “That I'm engaged? It's supposed o be a secret, but aunti telling ‘everybody. She’s so proud——" Mar- llyn was saying. * Xk x L A COUNT,” Mrs. Wontrow broke in. “It's quite in order, don't you know. We want Marilyn to have every advantage we'd have given our daughter if we had one. She really is & daughter to us.” The light from the chandeliers was 80 very brilliant. It seemed a very substance around one, one moved through it as though he were in a more ethereal atmosphere than ordi- narily he encounters on earth. The music required all of one's sufficiency, one's very thoughts beat to its snappy. fast rhythm. The glittering light and loud music combined to establish | the essence of one's personality, There ‘was nothing else. In the center of the floor they were laughing and dancing in heste | and looking at one another with so- phisticated faces; at the edges of the floor older people walked about, ex- cept fat men, lifting one eyebrow or knitting both. They were the most | dmportant people on earth, and Martin at last was one of them and not yet 30. One big order had done the ! trick. though behind it was 10 years of relentless drive, since the time of | his earliest manhood, when he had determined that he would be & success. * x x *x ON! big order—and Mr. Wontrow had invited him to come to the gathering at his home. He mingled with all these people and nodded to | the girl they called Marilyn, who was Mr. Wontrow’s niece and whom he had driven from the office to & hairdresser’s. brightly during the short drive and very distinctly. She was one of them. “I say there, m'dear, you wouldn't mind dancing now, would you?” a man with & monocle asked, and Mar- tin knew without being told that it ‘was Count Runlits. His hair came to & peak in the center of his forehead, his forehead was narrow and his face wide at the center; he was not more than twice Marilyn's age. A look of embarrassment. Bhe had talked very | Marilyn glanced up at Martin and for & moment or 80 it seemed to him a look of em- barrassment, even of shame, came inio her eyes. But she nodded and turned 0 her count and he whisked her off as well as a middle- "M-rflm had s0 difficult a time when she was young, you know,” Mrs. Wontrow said to Martin. “My brother ran off with some cheap little dance girl, It was hard to forgive him, though we| might have after | his wife died, bus | he was s0 insulting then you couldn't | do a thing with him. * % X% “MARILYN always was & dear, and when her father died, too, of course we took her in. Though if her father had had his way she'd never have come to us. Imagine, he had her learn typing and things like | that and actually had her a job all | ready just befre he died. I talked to | her then. Marilyn is a sensible girl.” Martin nodded. It was difficult to refrain from asking Mrs. Wontrow to | repeat what she was saying, for though he heard her words he seemed unable to understand them as they came to him—seemingly confused and | contorted not only by the blasts from the radio but by the lights as well. Marilyn and the count were among them again, and as it turned out Martin asked the girl if she cared to dance; she glanced up for her aunt's approval, and, though the count was there, she gave it. “How well you dance,” he smiled, and she did move as though to the | very rhythm not only of the music but | of the light from the chandeliers. | She nodded a sophisticated nod of | thanks for the compliment and said: “It'’s really quite un exciting party. Perhaps that's because I've 30 looked forward to it. That gentleman there, | the one in the colored shirt, was just | telling me about Monte Carlo. We plan to stop there on our honeymoon. 1 imagine it's quite an exciting and enjoyable place.” “I want to go to Monte Carlo some day,” he said as they danced and felt the vibrant urge of his ambition | charge through his body, but he did not look at her, did not look into her | eyes. * x x % | QUDDENLY the music stopped. The | lights went out. Darkness and si- lence where before had been the daz- zling light and the screeching music. | Still Martin held his arm around | Marilyn as they stood where they had nluddenly stopped. Then in the dark- | ness and silence they clung to one another; he felt her body tremble as though with a sob, and his arm tight- ened around her. She rested, and he | comforted her. With the quality of an explosion, the lights were on again, the music |in full force; she stiffened in his arms, the others were dancing, and | they were, too. “Nothing, nothing at all” Mrs. ‘Wontrow was explaining. “Just some- thing went wrong with the electricity for & moment.” The dance ended. They walked quickly from the center of the floor; they did not look at one another. They seemed not to dare. He wanted to get away, but it was in bad taste to leave, and 30 he remained speaking and smil- ing through the din of light and mu- sic to all the people Mrs. Wontrow introduced him, people he had wanted to meet because they could mean so much to his future. But during il the rest of that long | | evening he and Marilyn ecarefully | | avoided one another. ' (Copyrisht, 1936,) Nature’s Mourning Dove (Zenaidura macroura). BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. VEN those who know and love i1t best, never refer to the plaintive call of the mourning dove as a song. It is a sad, tender, sweet refrain, but never s Joyous note is uttered. No one has been able to give a reason why this lovely bird should have a doleful way of communicating its thoughts to the ‘world. ‘The male is a general fawn color on the forehead and on the back s cln-y purplish bronze, besides gray- brown. There are black spots un tha wings and tail, and underneath it is bluish. The bill is black, the feet -are red, and the two middle tail feathers are the longest. This dove has often been mistaken for the passenger pigeon, which has been extinct for many years. ‘The mourning dove ranges from Quebec to Panama and westward to Arizons. It is most often seen in the temperate climate that is found east of the Rocky Mountains. It is & common Bummer resident in fts chosen haunts and is not migratory south of Virginia. Once you have seen or heard the mourning dove, you ‘will be eager to know more about it. You must make the effort to become acquainted with these lovely birds, and in early March you will hear their plaintive “coo,” for it is courting time, .and the love song takes on special chmn. though the notes are the lnthothlck!ollnedltnoyw i {2 Children through it! There is nothing to keep the eggs and later the babies from tumbling off or through -their eradle. And her babies are born without a feather to their back! But most of the infants survive this cruel and un- friendly home and turn about a year later and treat their infants in the very same fashion. (Copyright, 1936, L = Children in School 35 Years. FLINT. | nel manager, A BIRD'S-EYE view of an auto race! That's what today's Twizzler is about. The pilot of an eastbound air- ship was passing over a famous race track just as the cars were lining up for the start. He noticed that there was an interval between the car in pole position and the next two cars, then another interval and the next three cars followed by another inter- val and then a pair of cars, an inter- val and the last cars. The cars, in position as described, carried the following numbers: Seven, two, eight, one, nine, six, three, four and five. The plane pilot then noticed that, grouped as the cars were, the number of the first car (seven) mul- tiplied by the adjacent numbers of the next two cars (twenty-eight) equnlcd‘ the figure formed by the adjacent numbers of the next three cars (one ninety-six), but the figure formed by the pair on the other side (thirty- four) muitiplied by the number of the | last car (five) did not equal one | ninety-six. He then idly \ondered‘ if the cars could be rearranged lo‘ that the number of the single car on | either side multiplied by the figure | formed by the pair of cars next w‘ |1t would equal the number formed by | the numbers on the three middle cars, ‘The answer should be found by mov- Ing as few cars as possible.
