i TOPIC AN _Reception ' Is Planned - For Dr. Ball " Metropolitan Baptist| Church Members to Honor Pastor. EMBERS of Metropolitan Baptist Church will honor the comple- tion of one-third of a century's serv- ice by their pastor, Dr. John Compton Ball, with an anniversary reception on New Year eve from 8 to 10:30 o'clock. Invitations have been sent to more than 2,000 guests. A musical program will be presented under the direction of Gilbert A. Clark, choir director, Characteriza- tion duets will be rendered by Gilbert C. and Nathan A. Clark. Others par= ticipating in the program will be Mrs. Gertrude Mockbee, church organist; Miss Florence 8. Sindell and Miss Ann Sorber. A special male chorus of past and present members and past and present members of the church choir will render selections. Rev. James Shera Montgomery will review the work of Dr. Ball. Felici- tations will be offered by church offi- eials and E. B. Shaver, Bible school superintendent. Born in Northamptonshire, - Eng- land, Dr. Ball came to America when | a small boy. He became pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church in 1903. Prom a small body of 365 worshipers in an antiquated building, the church membership, under Dr. Ball's leader- ship, has increased to more than 2,000. The Bible school now ranks second in enrollment and attendance among all denominations in this city. | The church property value is now more than $250.000. Dr. Ball, officiating as supply for the regular chaplains, has had the unique experience of opening the House of Representatives with prayer under eight different speakers, begin- ning with Speaker Cannon and con- tinuing under Speakers Clark, Gillett, Longworth, Garner, Rainey, Byrnes and Bankhead. Not even one mem- ber of the House who heard Dr. Ball's first prayer is now in Congress. Dr. Ball will preach tomorrow morn- ~ing on “My Greatest Blessing of 1836.” A number of new members will be welcomed. In the evening — the subject will be “An End That Is a Beginning.” The congregation and choir will sing songs. ‘The Shaver Bible Class, for-business and professional men, meets at 9:45 o'clbck in the main auditorium. The B. A. U. will be led by James Lillie. The program is “Rebuilding Our Missionary Program-in Palestine.” DRAMA GROUP WILL OFFER PLAY Takoma Park Preshyter- ian Services Announced for Tomorrow. Rev. R. Paul Schearrer, pastor of the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church, will preach at the 11 o'clock service on “The Authority of the Artist.” At 8 pm. a religious drama, “The Dust of the Road,” will be presented by the ! Takterian Players. The cast consists of Marjorie Vogel, Samuel Scrivener, sr.. Hugh M. Smythe and Will H. Carleton. Mr. Smythe is also direct- ing the cast and J. H. Vogel is stage director.
