GOUPLES TELLING RADIO OF WOES Happiest and Unhappiest Pairs Reveal Bliss and Troubie to Program. BY THE RADIO EDITOR. EDLEY BROWN and Allie Lowe Miles, who conduct the “Hus- bands and Wives” program, are getting some astounding an- swers in their radio contest to pick the bappiest and unhappiest married couples in the United States. Every- body who writes in claiming the title has to give & pretty good reason why the claim is valid. The tough part comes in those letters from the “unhappiest couples.” One of the rules is that they must not be divorced or even considering divorce. A good many of the questions con- sidered in the “Husbands and Wives” broadeasts are problems that make marriage unhappy. The people heard on the programs give their solutions to these problems. One husband and wife, without knowing it, were entered in the con- test. They are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown, a blind couple of Johnstown, Pa., who appeared on a recent broad- cast and were entered in the race for the happiest couple. Mrs. Brown declared: “They say love is blind, but my husband and I, who are blind, know it isn't so.” ETWORK radio is in the midst of & gala celebration this week. It's the tenth anniversary marking the day, November 15, 1926, when chain broadcasting first took on the aspects of a national business. ED WYNN has signed glamorous Lenore Ulric of the .stage and screen as the guest artist for the in- augural program of his new series Baturday. She will play a scene from one of the many Broadway hits in which she has appeared. 'DDIE CONRAD will make a guest appearance on the Rudy Vallee program before he begins a commer- cial of his own . . . Lily Pons has signed for a Columbia “Radio Thea- ter” date, November 16, when she and Adolphe Menjou will star in Noel Coward's “Conversation Piece” o . . Fred Allen is dickering but vows he won't go back to Hollywood until the radio season is over . .. Conrad ‘Thibault, famous radio baritone, will make a guest appearance during the Fred Astaire program Tuesday. R A MAY RENEW SUIT TO CURB MONEY Philadelphia to Attempt to Show Direct Interest in Reserve Board Issuance. The suit brought by John D. Mont- gomery, Philadelphia taxpayer, to en- Join the governor of the Federal Re- serve Board issuing any more money, which was dismissed yesterday by Justice Joseph W. Cox of District Court, probably will be renewed shortly, it was learned today. Justice Cox granted the request of Montgomery's attorney, J. Eugene Gardner, for leave to amend his bill of complaint, showing more definitely how he clalms he is injured by the issuance of currency by Federal Re- serve banks. Holding that Montgomery's suit failed to allege that he had any di- rect interest which would justify him in bringing the action, Justice Cox - granted a Government motion to dis- miss. United States Attorney Leslie C. Garnett represented the Federal Reserve officials. Montgomery asked not only that no more Federal Reserve notes be is- sued, but that the board be ordered to withdraw all now in circulation. He charged that Congress was with- out constitutional authority to dele- gate to the Federal Reserve banks its power to coin money,- and" that the banks had gained a “strangle hold control of money and a huge profit.” WOMAN’S SELF-IMPOSED IMPRISONMENT PROBED Police Break Into Home to Find Los Angeles Matron Near Death From Starvation. ©y the Associated Press. C., WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, How to Torture Your Husband, LIABILITY EVASION UPHELD BY COURT Wisconsin Jurists Sets, Compensa- tion Law Precedent ¥ by Rauling. By the Associated Press. MADISON, Wis, November 11— The Supreme Court established & precedent in workmen’s compensation law yesterday when it ruled that a partnership formed by a Madison monument dealer with several em- ployes for the express purpose of evading the law was valid. Under the decision, Jesse B. York of Monroe, who claimed compensation for silicosis, lost an award which the Dane County Circuit Court said he should have. The record 'showed that Schligen Memorials, Inc., entered a partner- ship with York and others in 1932 because it felt it could not continue in business if it had to pay workmen’s compensation. The partnership was dissolved two years later. The Supreme Court said the pur- pose of the arrangement was to evade liability, but if the contracts were valid, the law must recognize them. HELP_MEN.
