" BACK FROM ‘DEAD, MAN WONT TALK Veteran Who Vanished Eight Years Ago Awaits | Brother in Reno. BY the Assoclated Press. RENO, Nev., October 23.—Jesse Owen Gifford—a Tennessee World ‘War veteran of the same name was declared legally dead in 1931—awaited today the arrival of his“brother from | the South before shedding light on an + eight-year disappearance. “I'm going to talk to him first,” said the 41-year-old Gifford whose application for a bonus caused him to admit he was the missing man. An Alabama friend was tried and ac- quitted five years ago on a charge of murdering Gifford, after recovery of & body from the Tennessee River. Gifford disappeared in 1928. In South Pittsburgh, Tenn., Mrs. + Gifford, living with her two sons, de- clared her love, but said her husband will “have a lot of explaining to do.” At Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. Mollie Atkins, mother of Gifford, blamed shell shock and gas during the war for her son’s actions. She urged him to return home. Hobbling on crutches, Gifford, who has said he would not go back is wife or to Tennessee, asserted: “I'm going to tell my brother we are go- ing as far away from here as pos- sible.” It was in Reno that Gifford ap- plied for the bonus after his leg was injured in an automobile accident. + His wife already has collected the ‘bonus on the assumption her husband ‘was dead. Gifford cried openly while reading mewspaper accounts of his relatives. LAST VOTE CALL SOUNDED North Carolinians Urged at 11th Hour to Register.
