SPANISH EMBASSY STAFFCUTTOTWO Minor Attaches Only Persons Left After Calderon Resigns. By the Assoclated Press. Two minor attaches were all that were left today of the Spanish Em- bassy personnel here following the Tesignations of Ambassador Don Luis Calderon and most of his official staff. A short time after the Ambassador himself authorized public announce- ment of his retirement because of his inability to co-operate with the new extremist government in Madrid, his military attache, Maj. Jose Vidal, an- nounced he also had forwarded his Tesignation to Madrid. This left actually on duty here only Don Juan Terrasa, the commercial attache, and Maj. Ramon Franco, air attache and brother of Generalissimo Francisco Franco, leader of the in- surgent forces, now seeking to over- throw the Spanish regime. Five Attaches Resign, Five other secretaries and attaches previously had resigned or failed to return to their posts from leave, due to sympathy with the rebel cause. Because reports from the Spanish capital previously had said Maj. Franco's dismissal had been ordered, presumably, because of his relation- ship to the rebel chieftain, the length of his tenure here remained in doubt. It was said officially, however, that he still was considered a member of the embassy staff because no instruc- tions concerning him have been re- ceived. Embassy Status Mystery, Even moe mystery cloaked the actual status of the embassy itself in view of the fact that no one apparently had been designated to take temporary charge. Terrasa said he had not been assigned to that duty and that he did not know whether any one else had. Ambassador Calderon has not yet notified the State Department of his resignation and it was said that until he does so he still will be recognized by the United States Government as the accredited Spanish government Tepresentative. A constant stream of refugees con- tinued to flow into France from the battle sector although their numbers ‘were reduced by rebel domination of the international bridges at Irun and Behobia. Many of the fleeing resi- dents were using boats to cross the 100-foot wide Bidassoa River consti- tuting the border between France and Spain. Carlists (traditionally monarchists), sent food supplies to a number of French citizens gathered at the Irun consulate. The French consul agent, who had remained in Irun with a number of his countrymen, met the victorious rebels with a white flag and was assured the refugees under his care would be unharmed. GOVERNMENT CLAIMS VICTORIES. (Copyright. 1936, by tne Associated Press.) MADRID, September 7.—Govern- ment commanders, jubilant over re- ported victories in Toledo Province, asserted officially today that rebel re- eistance in the southern stronghold of Cordoba had “given way.” Fascist troops concentrated at Zar- egoza, in the northeast, were declared in a “desperate situation” in an offi- cial statement from the war ministry. The government previously had acknowledged the seriousness of the situation in the Estremadura region just west of Talavera, bordering on Badajoz and Caceres Provinces. Cordoba, seat of extensive rebel opera- tions since the outbreak of the Fascist rebellion against the Madrid govern- ment in July. ‘The war ministry’s statement came on the heels of an apparent rebel at- tempt to bombard the capital from the air once more. (Censored dispatches declared the population, awakened at 1:45 am. by screaming sirens, went quickly and | quietly to shelters. Information re- garding whether the attack was actu- ally made was apparently withheld.) Confidence in the new government, | which includes two Communist minis- ters in the cabinet, was asserted to have been bolstered by the Socialist successes reported from the field. “Our victory eliminates the hitherto imminent danger of a march on Madrid,” said Maj. Carlos Conteras, government commander in the Tala- vera sector. “Now that we have got Talavera— | the nerve center of our communica- | tions between Madrid and Toledo in | the south and Madrid and Merida in| @ the west—we can sweep every rebel out of the Tagus Valley.” Government militiamen, described by Maj. Conteras as “like a devil in- carnate,” drove the rebels back 15 miles with frontal and flank attacks from the hills onto the highway held by the Fascists. The city of Talavera was surrounded on three sides by Socialist soldiers, |} reported Gen. Jose Asensio, com- mander in chief of all operations in | the central sector. Before the rebels retired, Andres | Martin, 23-year-old commander of the government garrison, and 75 of his men were whipped with revolver belts and then shot, the official report stated.
