The following weekly review of the live stock market has been pre- pared especially for the Associated Press by the United States Depart- ment of Agriculture, CHICAGO, September 5 (United States Department of Agriculture) — Price changes on all species of live stock were slightly in favor of the | producing and selling side during the |past week. While cattle and hogs | show measurable gains as compared with a week ago, fat lambs have ad- | vanced more than other live stock. Some improvement in the dressed meat markets at the principal con- .+ | suming centers was in a large way responsible for siightly higher live prices. Cooler weather in some areas was also a factor in promoting price .“‘ben.ermem Fed steers and yearlings closed the zmueek strong to 25 cents higher at 3% | Chicago. with all grades of yearlings *% | and light cattle active at the advance, ”‘nThere was some slowness on weighty | bullocks, especially those scaling up- 2034 | ward from 1,400 pounds. Strictly 2 | grain-fed offerings, mostly weighty kinds, predominated in the run, a 2% | condition which reflected continued liquidation on account of high feed- o |ing costs. Also, numerous loads of highly conditioned steers, which have 214 | been carried along in anticipation of higher prices, were une loaded because of excess weight, Hog Gains Slight. While most of the important hog | marketing centers reported slight gains for the week, the advance was more in the nature of a forced condi- tion than otherwise. Moderate re- ceipts and at times a scarcity of strictly good and choice hogs con- | tributed to a few highly competitive | markets in that branch of the trade. Final price levels range all the way 4% | from steady to 50 cents higher than 74%% | 1ast Priday. The week's top of $11.60 2‘: at Chicago. was paid late in a market 4 | that figured 10 to 15 cents higher for 255 the week. Bulk sales good and choice 33 190-250-pound offerings were within 835 | a narrow range of $11.25 to $11.50. % | The Kansas City top of $11.25 was paid Monday and Thursday, while most of the desirable 190-250-pound weights went to shippers at 811 to $11.25. Better medium weights top- ped the St. Louis market late at §11.70, with the bulk at $11.40 to $11.65. £ Fat Lambs Climb. lambs gained more price i relatively than other species stock, the upturn measuring 25 to 50 cents as a whole. Moderate marketings and improved dressed out- let contributed to the price restora- tion. Choice native lambs finished the week at an outside peak of $10.15 at Chicago, with best Western range lambs up to $10. Western range | lambs comprised a large portion of the salable supply at Chicago and bulk sales at $9.50 to $10 late compared with a range of $8.75 to $9.50 early n the week. Washington rangers were in the majority numerically, but there was some representation from Montana and Idaho.
