By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 18.—Man's | new found fondness for “air-cooled” trousers 13 helping to keep the wool industry out of its usual SBummer doldrums. A national telegraphic survey by the Associated Woolen Industries, trade organization, revealed average sales of tropical-weight worsted suits are running 50 per cent ahead of last year. P. B. Todd, director of the Asso- clated Woolen Industries, said “the wool industry was one of the first to herald the approach of he‘ter times. Merchandisers this year are finding ready sales for woolen products be- cause of the wide diversity of appeal. ranging from evening Zowns to red flannels.” One large 8t. Louls manufacturer reported May sales of Summer worsteds were 300 per cent greater than in the like 1935 month, snd another said his business ran 40 per cent higher. Raw Material Moves Slower. Increases of more than 100 per cent in May and June over the cor- responding 1935 months were re- ported by stores in Boston, Deroit and Wichita, Kans. Merchandisers in Milwaukee and Kansas City sald the demand for worsteds was “un- usually heavy.” Due to a 15 per cent rise in prices last year, “soured” wool, the raw | material for the mills, 15 moving | somewhat slower than in 1935, when 304,000,000 pounds were sold, the heaviest volume since 1923 and 81.5 per cent more than in 1934 Clothing takes by far the largest | year, and its retail volume is watched | | closely by the industry as a gauge of | future business. | | Most recent figures show men's ”hlmllmenu account for roughly 52 | per cent of toial .pparel class wool | | consumption, while women's wesr | | uses 38 per cent. As indicative of a market far from saturated, however. the trade group estimated that tre total mount !of wool used in men’s apparel last year was not enough io make half a suit per adult male in the United | States. 1 | Sales of womer's wear yroducts have shown a marked upturn in re- | cent months and further improvement | is anticipated by the industry. There are aporoximately 500,000 ! wool growers in the United States, to- gether with employes of mills, cutting |and tailoring establishments, it is| estimated that close to 5.000.600 per- | sons sre dependent upon wool for a livelihood. 1 | RADICAL CHANGES HIT CHEMICAL MARKETS Bt the Associated Press. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August on the heels of comment in a trade Journal that it was predominantly a “sellers’ market” in steel, Wall Street circles were not particularly surprised to hear that leading producers were | considering another boost in finished prices for the fourth quarter. Steel men have indicated that mar- gins have been shortened by rising production costs affecting both labor and materials. Adoption by a num- ber of the Jarger producers of vacation schedules with pay for mill workers, has been cited as one factor in rais- ing costs. In addition, observers point out, the industry is facing wage increase de- mands from a considerable body of its workers. While these are being considered it is only reasonable to assume, according to trade opinion, that producers will want to bolster | profit levels—just in case it finds it expedient to make any extensive wage adjustments. A fourth quarter advance would be the second boost this year. The lift |at the half year was also dictated by rising costs, but producers were said to have approached the problem with some little apprehension that the rise ever, with little show of resistance.
