GLASS DENOUNCES TAXATIONTYRANNY Claims Patrick Henry Would Have Opposed Present U. S. Policies. By the Assoclated Press. ASHLAND, Va, July 18.—Senator Carter Glass, 78-year-old Virginia Senator, said “We have a government of privilege and discrmination,” in an extemporaneous speech yesterday at the Patrick Henry Bi-centennial Celebration here. It is a government, he said, such as Henry denounced in the House of Burgesses when he made a brief | speech “that it was improper to take money of taxpayers of Virginia and appropriate it to pay off mortgages that had been made by thriftless and unwise individuals.” “That is just what we are doing in this country today,” Glass said, “whether it be due to the misman- agement of bank managers, insurance dompany managers or the misman- | agers of businesses or railroads. The | Government’s nose is in all sorts of business today.” Puts Blame on Congress. “The President of th2 United States | has been bitterly criticized. but. my comment on his actions would be to | the effect that he made the mistake | of taking all the power that Congress | was willing to give him.” the Sen- | | ator continued. “It is the Congress | that should be blamed for abjectly | surrendering its own constitutional | functions and delegating them to the | | President of the United States and | to various minor executive officials.” | “I expect to abide by my oath of | | office, and an oath'is as sacred to me as to the President or to anybody else,” he said at another point. “And if any measure is against my better judgment and conviction, I am going to vote against it every time. “Patrick Henry would go along with {me. I would envy the power of our great countryman in denouncing op- | pressive and unwise measures. If I | had his force of speech, we might have | accomplished something in the Senate | without putting the Supreme Court to | the trouble of deciding these matters.” Sees Wage Earners Hit. ‘The veteran Senator said Henry was opposed to tyranny of all kinds, add- g, “And I submit that there is no | HASTINCS HO'I'E more damaging species of tyranny than that of taxing the many for the benefit of the few.” Asserting Democrats had not writ- ten a single line to repeal a single line of the Smoot-Hawley tariff, he sald: “We will let industries continue their species of robbery and let other groups institute their species of rob- bery. When it comes to wage earners, clerks and stenographers, professional men and a large class of others, 56,- 000,000 of them, the exaction fee is from both pockets at the same time.” Answers Criticism. Referring to criticism of his actions and those of Senator Harry F. Byrd, Virginia's junior Senator, Glass said: “My answer is that I am proud that the Supreme Court, in 10 out of 11 cases, sustained me in every speech that I made and every vote that I cast and did not sustain the views of my eritics.” Last night the crowd turned its at- tention again to Hanover Courthouse and the pageant, “liberty or death.” A ball at Ashland afterwards brought the three-day bi-centennial celebration to a close. 45 AT REUNION DINNER Marine Corps Veterans Meet at Willard Hotel.
