NEW YORK, July 18.—Listed bond: were mixed and quieter in the final session of the week today after the substantial gains marked up recently among corporate issues. Treasury obligations were somewhat steadier in tone, but the market| continued to eye closely a movement | toward upward revision in yields on trade paper as a possible hint of change in underlying money market conditions growing out of the boost in reserve requirements for member banks of the Federal Reserve system. Some dealers said, however, there was no definite indication of a ten- gency to shy away from high-grade | issues on possibility of a general hard- ening of money costs over the next few months. They pointed out '.hll' even with the higher reserve require- | | ments banks are expected to retain | a great surplus of loanable funds. ! Atlantic, Gulf & West Indies 55 was A weak spot, dropping nearly 3 points | to 73's. Albany perforated Wrap- ping Plper 6s in contrast spurted 4 points at one time to 77. Prime rail and corporate issues generally maintained a good tone around their peak prices. Gains of fractions to a point or more were recorded for Allis-Chalmers 4s at 13412, Chesapeake Corp. 5s at 1545, Great Northern 4!»s at 1023, and Youngstown Sheet & Tube 3!zs at 1107%%. Small losses were contributed by Erie 55, New York Central 5s and Goodyear 5s. The Treasury list was mixed but changes narrow. The 33gs, matur- ing 1943; the 3%s, due the same year, and the 3'4s, maturing in 1941, were off slightly. Rallies lifted the 3s of 1946, the 27s of 1955 and the 23;s of 1945 for gains of as much as five thirty-seconds at one time. The foreign division also was ir- segular, INVESTING COMPANIES o RK. Juls ritr Dealers’ Ass on 18 —New ociati York & Tr ) FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW YORK. Julv 18 (& —Federsl Land Wide Fluctuations Shown Prior to Order Reducing Volume. By tre Associated Press. The Federal Reserve Board last night attributed wide fluctuations in excess bank reserves, prior to its order reducing their volume, to the financial operations of the Treasury. In its monthly bulletif, it said thas huge Government deposits in the Fede eral Reserve banks, withdrawn to pay the soldiers’ bonus, were flowing thence into the commercial banks to | swell their reserve accounts. (Excess reserves are funds deposited with the Reserve banks by the come mercial banks over and above a speci« fied percentage of their own deposits, which under the law they are forbide den to touch. The excess constitute: generally speaking, the basis of t money and credit market.) Moves To Save Credit. To avoid an “injurious expansion of credit,”” the board this week ordered 2 50 per cent increase in reserve ree quirements, thus removing an estie mated $1,400,000,000—capable of mule tiplification into 10 times that amount of credit—from the money market, At that time it cited the tremendous flow of imported gold as the major factor in increasing excess reserves, Going into the background, the bulles tin last night said that, while, for a time, the Treasury’s new practice of depdsiting large amounts in the Ree serve banks, rather than the commere cial banks, had reduced reserves, the situation had been reversed in recent weeks. “Member bank reserve balances, which increased in May and the first half of June largely in reflection of gold imports, were sharply reduced in the third week of June as a result of Treasury fiscal operations,” the board said “They increased again in the last half of the month as the Treasury paid out a large amount from its | accumulated balances in cashing ade Jjusted service bonds. “Excess reserves declined from ® total of nearly $3,000,000,000 on June 10 to about $2,000,000.000 on June 17, the smallest amount for over a yea By the end of the month, they had n to $2,700,000,000.” Maintained Large Balance. The Board then said that for seve eral months the Treasury has maine tained a large working balance of cash on hand, with deposits of much more than usual size in the Reserve banks. This, it added, for a time kept excess reserves at a lower level than would have been the case if the money had been deposited in commercial banks. The June 15 financing also reduced reserves, the board noted, with the Treasury selling $1.100,000,000 of new bonds In bor other about the last half of June, however, payments of $800,000,000 and Treasury expenditures brought a decline of $700,000,000 in t deposits with the Ree ., while money in circula« tion increased by $250,000,000 as the bonus money reached the veterans and was spent by them.
