Gold Hoards To Be Moved To Fort Knox By the Assoctated Press. The first movement of gold from Eastern seaboard caches to the new impregnable repository at Fort Knox, Ky., will be made next month. ‘While Treasury officials maintained their usual reticence in discussing large movements of tie metal. it was indicated there today that the bullion would be shipped by parcel post, fol- lowing the successful employment of this method in moving San Francisco hoards inland to the mint at Denver. Presumably, it will be taken from the New York assay office, where large stocks are maintained. Local police agencies will be noti- fled of the shipment in advance and urged by Federal authorities to jail all suspiclous-looking characters until all consignments reach Fort Knox. Movement of the gold will be in spe- cial armored trains of six coaches each, consisting of three cars of bullion it- self, two Pullmans and one dining car. The trains will run on a special sched- ule, each carrying between $50,000,000 and $75,000,000. PAY ROLLS MOUNT IN MARYLAND Reach Highest Peak in June | Than Any Month | Since 1930. By the Assoctated Press. COLLEGE PARK, Md., July 16— | A survey by the Maryland Crop Re- | porting Service indicated today that production prospects for all Mary- land crops, except sweet potatoes, are | now those of last year. Based on July 1 conditions, the sur- vey showed wheat was up 4 per cent in planted acreage, with barley and soybeans up 11 per cent. Against these increases, however, acreage de- creases were noted as follows: Corn, 4 per cent; oats, 11; rye, 11; potatoes, 15; commercial truck crops, T, truck crops for canning, 9. No acreage change was reported for sweet potatoes, hay and tobacco. Wheat Acreage Compares. The report estimated Winter wheat acreage for harvesting at 445,000, | compared with 428,000 acres last year. | and the five-year (1928-32) average of | 460,000. Conditions July 1 indicated a prob- able yield of 17.5 bushels of wheat per acre. Last year, the yleld was 20.5 bushels. Because of decreased acreage and a slightly below-average condition, the report estimated a corn crop 15 per cent below last year's production, but 3 per cent ahove the five-year aver- | age. | A crop of 27 per cent in oats pro- _duction and 26 per cent in barley was predicted by the service, as compared | ery short” take hay crop was likewise anticipated. | Potato production will be 20 per cent under last year's mark. the sur- | vey stated, and 25 per cent below the five-year average. Sweet Potato Prospects. | Sweet potato prospects on July 1 were slightly better than on the same date in 1935, but somewhat below the \ 10-year average (1923-32). An apple | crop 34 per cent below last year’s, and | a peach crop 11 per cent below, were predicted. Although tobacco acreage is about the same, the service said, July 1 con- | ditions indicated the crop will run about 19 per cent short of the 1935 production mark and 11 per cent un- | der the five-year average. - —— PHILADELPHIA PRODUCE.
