Following four consecutive weekly advances, the wholesale commodity price index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association showed a slight decline in the week ended December 7. The index for the week stood at 79.9 per cent of the 1926-28 average, com- pared with 80.1 in the preceding week, 79.4 a month ago and 75.5 a year ago. ‘The trend of commodity prices was generally downward in the latest week, with six of the component groups of the index declining and only two ad- vancing, ‘The most important decline oceurred in the grains, feeds and live stock group, with 11 commodities in the group moving downward and two ad- vancing and with grain and live stock prices generally lower. ‘The trend of foodstuff prices was mixed, with five items rising and four declining, resulting in a smali decline in the foods group index. There was a sharp rise in egg prices, but such important commodities as sugar, flour and potato prices were lower during the week. The textiles index registered a small decline, with an advance in wool prices failing to counterbalance slightly lower quotations for cotton, burlap, hemp and silk. NEW YORK, December 10.—Offi- cers of Loew's, Inc,, said in answer to questions from stockholders at the annual meeting today that earnings in the first quarter of fiscal year are expected to approximate those of the preceding quarter. This showing would be made, it was predicted, despite the fact that film amortization charges during the period were around the largest in the com- pany’s history, These increased charges, it was explained, were due to the release of a number of high- cost films. Over 50 per cent of the cost of a film, it was said, is written off in the first 12 weeks after the release. George N. Armsby of the Banc- america-Blair Corp. and William A. Parker, president of Incorporated In- vestors, were elected directors, suc- ceeding David Loew and Arthur Loew, who resigned during the year.
