B—10 THE EVEN NG STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1935. TA BIT nervously, A I found my really excellent seat in the rapid- ly filling opera house and waited expectantly for the curtain to rise on the famed Michele and “The Doll's House.” Only the unexpected illness ©of the regular dra- matic critic on my paper had given me the chance to fulfill one of my ambitions and cover a show, SO paturally I was eager to do a com- petent job and miss nothing.” So intent was T upon following the action of the play, I paid scant at- tention to the late arrival of a middle-aged, immaculate- 1y dressed gentleman who took the seat on my right. When the first-act curtain fell, however, I turned and spoke to him. Evidently he, too, was e critic, judging from the bored stare; it was as though he had seen the play many times. “La Michele is a convincing Nora, {sn't she?” I opened. Certainly a bit of expert comment from & regular critic would do no harm to my re- view, T figured. “Michele undergoes no great trans- ftion when she plays that role,” he emiled as we strolled to the foyer for # smoke, “for in private life she is as temperamental and unpredictable. “There's a story I could tell you, fad,” he mused. “That goes back 15 years, when Michele was younger but 1o less magnetic than she is today, and when one of her few sincere de- cisions made me the most unhappy man alive.” ,I WAITED eagerly, scenting some first-rate copy, but he merely glanced at his pocket watch and shook his head. “Later, my boy,” he promised, “we'd best be getting back pow, it's almost curtain time.” With my companion’s words in my ears, I felt a more intimate interest in Michele during the second act. “La Michele is & genuine artist” my new acquaintance began, as we again smoked during the entr’acte. “Fifteen years ago she was prac- tically unknown in the world of the stage, playing whenever and wherever the could manager to secure a small part. She lived, ate, slept for only one purpose—to become some day a great, actress. “Always it has been that passion for self-advancement which has prompted her to choose the persons to be around her. Even today, at the peak of her art, she is cold, selfish. The image of fame early in her life made her that way and it is too late to change. 1 turned EIE * x ok % "THEEE were two men who gave her the first help in her strug- gle. We'll just call them Smith and Brown. Smith was a producer of un- questionable success, and seemed to be a most logical person to help Mi- chele when she applied to him for a part in a play he was producing. Smith at once fell a victim of her beauty and put her in the cast with- out much ado. “But Smith’s old-time chum, Brown, Was working at the theater, too, as DAILY SHORT STORY- MISLEADING LADY By Glenn Reilly. a playwrigk.t. Both fell madly in love witi Michele. “You can imagine the situation, with both friends trying to be faithful to each other and at the same time win P the smiles and the N hand of the lovely actress. Smith found that there * was no role suited to her in the play, but retained her anyway. “Brown felt that he must do some- thing to match Smith's generosity, so he wrote a part in the play espe- cially for Michele, which didn’t great- ly alter the plot, but gave her a chance to act. “To the surprise of both Smith and tne playwright rival, Michele was a hit with the public, even in the in- ferior part which had been manu- factured for her. * ok K ok THE three began to be seen every- where together, for each man schemed to be alone with the girl, and so steal a march on the other. Con- sequently, as Michele was a more adroit schemer than either of them dreamed, wheven she went any place at all, she always made sure that both Smith and Brown accompanied her. So, although their friendship was too firm for actual jealousy, each plotted a way to win the affection of the girl. “After Michele had been associated with them for a time, each sensed that through her great ambition the scales could be balanced to the favor of one of them. Brown began work on a new play which he wrote for her, in which he took advantage of every bit, he knew of her abilities to shape the leading role to fit her exactly. Michele was wild with joy when he presented it to her. “There was nothing Smith could do but produce the play and make it as $reat a success as possible. By this time both men were almost in- sane with their longing for the in- imitable Michele, and would have gone to any lengths to do anything for ner. and spoke. ¥k ”SMITB showed up one day with a man to back the show. This wealthy man, upon seeing Michele, and hearing her praises sung so loudly by the lovesick pair, agreed to spend an enormous amount to make the show a success. “From then on, things went at a whirlwind pace. Smith and Brown each felt that there was a tacit un- derstanding that if the show was successful Michele would choose be- tween them. The plays opened, and it was a natural, as it should have een with the two rivals putting their hearts and souls into their work for the woman they loved to distraction.” He paused to relight his cigar. “I can see that she used her start to good advantage” I said. Then the curiosity getting the better of me, “Your tale seems to be a personal one. Tell me, which one were you, Smith or Brown?” He looked up at me and blew out the match. “Neither, unfortunately,” he grunted. “I was the wealthy back- er she ceserted the both of them to Shall we go in?” (Copyright. 1935.) marryl Bedtime Stories Talking BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. Talk over things: 'twill alwavs pay. The answer you may find that Way. —Old Mother Nature. OW that it was settled that they would stay North for the Winter, Winsome Bluebird and Welcome Robin made their plans, and whenever they met they talked things over. “I can be very comfortable down in the cedar swamp,” said Welcome "Robin. “No matter how cold the weather gets, I'll be all right down there, I think. “You know if it got very bad you ‘could spend a night or two in Farmer Brown's barn,” said Winsome Blue- bird. Welcome Robin nodded. “Yes,” said he, “I could do that, providing there 4s any way of getting in.” “There are openings where the Pigeons go in and out,” said Winsome Bluebird. “And where will you spend your time?” asked Welcome Robin. “Oh, you'll probably see me down in the cedar swamp more or less,” re- plied Winsome Bluebird. “As I told ®AND WHERE WILL YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?” ASKED WELCOME ROBIN, you before, I sleep in one of those houses that Farmer Brown's boy put up. There is straw in the bottom of #t and it is very comfortable.” “I suppose the folks that have gone down South are pitying us,” sald Wel- come Robin. ‘Winsome Bluebird nodded. “I sup- pose they are,” he said. “Of course, they don't understand that in some ways we are better off than they are.” ‘Welcome Robin looked a bit puzzled over this remark. “In what ways?” he asked, “Well, to begin with,” replied Win- some Bluebird, “we have fewer ene- mies to watch for now than we had in the Summer, for most of our feath- ered enemies have gone outh also. So Mrs. Bluebird and Mrs. Robin and the rest of the small feathered folk who have gone South will have not only the enemies that live there to watch out for, but the enemies that go down from up here. I'll venture to say that you haven't seen a single It Over. member of the Hawk family since cold weather began.” “I've seen one,” Robin, “but he doesn’t count. He is Roughleg, who has come down from farther North, and he's spending the most of his time hunting for Mice on the Green Meadows. Then I did hear that Terror the Goshawk has been seen in the Green Forest, but I don't know how true that is. Of course, there are some Owls.” “Only two,” replied Winsome Blue- bird. “They are Hooty the Great Horned Owl and Spooky the Screech Owl, and it is easy enough to keep out of their way. Tommy Tit the Chickadee says that last year Butcher the Shrike was down here for & while. Of course, he may show up, but until he does I'm not going to worry about it. As long as we keep out of the way of Black Pussy the Cat we have little to worry about from enemies. Then, too, with the leaves gone from the trees it is easier to see an enemy.” interrupted Welcome Robin. “The way I look at it,” saild Win- some Bluebird, “is that we are really in less danger remaining here than are those who have taken the long Journey. Always that journey is dan- gerous. All sorts of things are likely to happen. Always there are plenty of Hawks ready to swoop down. Then there are dangers in flight. There are storms. There are blinding lights at night, when so many of us feathered folk fly. There is the search for food in unfamiliar places every day, and, finally, when we do reach the place ‘where we expect to spend the Winter, we must be constantly on the watch for hungry enemies there. So alto- gether, so long as we can be sure of food enough up here, I think on the whole we are going to be better off, no matter how cold it gets.” “That is just my feeling,” replied ‘Welcome Robin. “As long as I don't have to worry about food Il not worry about anything.” So Welcome Robin and Winsome Bluebird settled themselves to stay the Winter. It occasioned a lot of gos- sip among the feathered folk of the Old Orchard and the Green Meadows. Some said they were foolish and some said they were wise. Only the Winter would tell which was right. (Copyright, 1935.)
