A—-8 THE EVENING HEIGHI MARK SH Canine Pets in the News BY SOVIET PLANE 47,818 Feet Ascent Re- ported, Against 47,354 by Italian Last Year. By the Associated Press. MOSCOW, November 22.—Soviet Test Pilot Viadimir Kokinaki said to- dsy he set a new world altitude record for airplanes by ascending 47,818 feet, or slightly more than 9 miles. The present official record was es- tablished by Itallan Comdr. Renato Donati, who reached 47,354 feet (8.96 miles), in & flight from Rome April 11, 1934, Claims Are Confirmed. The instruments in Kokinaki’s open, single-motored biplane were examined after his 62-minute flight by a com- mission of Soviet experts, who con- firmed the flyer’s claims. Kokinaki, 31 years old and a former stevedore, had made repeated unsuc- cessful attempts to better the record. On the flight which he said finally brought him success he took fuel enough only for the ascent and| spiraled to the ground with an empty tank after remaining 10 minutes at his peak altitude. Encrusted By Ice. “An ice crust started forming on the plane when I was about 39,000 feet up,” he said in an interview. “It even formed on my helmet and clothing. Although the oxygen ap- paratus worked as well as might be| expected, I began to experience a| shortage of air. “Even the slightest movement re- quired great effort. It was 60 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, and I felt bitterly cold, although I wore furs. Plane Quits Task. “T fought my way up yard by yard. Finally the plane refused to mount further. I looked down and saw the Kremlin, the Moscow River and other landmarks. “Looking up at the sun hurt my eyes. T wore no glasses as I found on pre- vious flights ice formed on them. “After 10 minutes when the gas was exhausted, I shut off the motor and started planing down. “I believe it possible to go higher #nd intend to make another attempt.” ICKES’ AUTO ROBBED, PARKED NEAR OFFICE Chauffeur Reports Loss of Lap Robe and Cushion, Property of Government.
