Following an all-night vigil by prominent Catholic laymen, final rites were held today for Rev. Eugene de L. McDonnell, 8. J., retired retreat master at Manresa-on-Severn and former ‘Washington rector, whose death Mon- day was mourned by thousands of laymen in the Archdiocese of Balti- more. Rev. Arthur A. O'Leary, 8. J., presi- dent of Georgetown University and a friend of many years, celebrated requiem mass this morning in Holy Trinity Church. Interment was in the Jesuit cemetery at Georgetown Uni- versity, where Father McDonnell was graduated many years ago. Officers of the League of Laymen's Retreat acted as pallbearers and cross- bearers at the services. Last night members of the Washington section of the league chanted the rosary at the crypt in St. Willlam’s Chapel at Georgetown, where the body of the priest rested. A guard of honor, com- prised of delegates from the various parishes in the city, watched over the body during the night. Father McDonnell formerly was rec- tor of Gonzaga College and of Holy Trinity and St. Aloysius’ Churches in this city before he devoted his entire attention in late years to the retreats of laymen in the diocese.
