By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 14—The bond market retained most of its earlier irregularity during late trads ing today, with an extension of ad- vances among Government issues up to 1% of a point the principal feature. Three issues of Treasury bonds ad- vanced 7-32 under fairly heavy de- mand and most of the other active issues, along with guaranteed obliga- tions, did almost as well. Elsewhere] the trend was decidedly mixed, with | most of the low-priced railroad issues, | including St. Paul 5s, Erie 5s and Missouri Pacific 55 a trifie lower. Industrials and utilities were mostly higher. An advance of 13 points in German (Dawes) 7s to 39% was & feature of the foreign department, where higher prices were generally the rule. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, October 14 —Tumbles of | wheat prices formed the rule today from start to finish. First peeps of peace suggestions from Italy had a bearish market ef- fect. Beneficial rains in Argentina added impetus to declines. Wheat closed weak, 1%a23% under Friday's finish, 1.02'sa%; cdrn, 1ga%s off; December, 597,a60; oats, l:a% off, and pro- visions showing 5 to 15 cents setback. pOVHEAT— Ogen. High. Low. C, OUTLOOK BRIGHT FOR COPPER TRAD Demand and Prices Expand in U. S. as Well as at Foreign Centers. BY RADER WINGET, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, October 14.—After repeated revivals believed to be pre- mature, the copper industry has en- tered a stage of advancement which trade authorities declare is as bright as the burnished metal itself. Demand and prices have expanded together, with the greatest attention focused on price. In the domestic market, quotations held steady at 9.25 cents a pound, gained early last week. In foreign centers the price hag been as high as 9.15 cents a pound, although the range recently has been more between 8.95 and 9.10 cents. War Spurs European Sales. Active buying in the United States has been parallel to the heavy demand in European markets, but in Europe, trade authorities say, buying is aided either by war or war preparations. In this country, on the other hand, has resulted from the general expan- sion of industrial activity rather than | from war demand or as the result of | - High. Low. NEW YORK, October 14.—Lumber shipments, new business booked at the mills and production during the week ended October 5 were all lower than during the preceding three weeks, the National Lumber Manafacturers’ Asso-~ ciation reported today. Production was well above the August average and shipments and orders were about up to that level. All items were considerably in excess of the corresponding week of 1934. UPTURN EXTENDED IN HOME BUILDING Contracts in 37 States To- tal $41,810,800, Compared| ! to $40,528,300 in August. By the Associated Press. NE WYORK. October 14.—Residen- tial building contracts let in the 37 Eastern States during September to- talled $41,810,800, compared with $40,- 528,300 in August and $17,853,600 in September last year, according to F. ‘W. Dodge Corp. The September volume brought the figures for the first nine months of $186,080,100 in the same period in 1934. This gain of about 30 per cent, the corporation says in its summary, was entirely due to improvement in private activity as distinguished from public housing undertakings. Heavy losses in governmental proj- ects from last year has resulted in a lower total volume of construction in the first three quarters of this year, despite the improvement in residential construction, the corporation states. This year the total for that period was $1,191,667,700, as against $1,203,- 507,200 in the same period in 1934. For September alone, the corporation reported, total awards for all classes of construction aggregated $167,376,200, compared with $168,557,200 in August and $110,151,200 in Ssptember, 1934. On the basis of results so far the corporation says residential building has finally arrived at the $400,000,000 tinues as the most important since de- | velopment ir the construction field.
