C. A. Tries to End Limi- tations on Signals Under Abnormal Conditions. NEW approach to the trans- A mission of short-wave radio- telegraph signals over long distances will be tried by R. C. A. this Fall on the completion of a new 200-kilowatt short-wave transmitter now under construction at the company’s station at Rocky | L' Point, Long Island. By means of this tremendous short- wave power, which is five to ten times the intensity usually employed in international communication, it is proposed to “battle the jonosphere with kilowatts” and override certain natural obstacles which to date have limited the signal strength under ab- normal conditions. The {fonosphere is an electrified region at the earth’s outer atmos- phere. Short-wave radio signals are reflected back and forth between this region and the earth in their passage around the globe. There are cycles in the daily condition of the jon- osphere which make it necessary to use several wave lengths for long- distance radio communication. There are also times of magnetic disturb- ances, when the turbulent condition of* the ionosphere causes absorption and dispersion of the radio signals and consequently reduced signal strength at the receiver. It is then that even highly concentrated radio beams become least effective. What the engineers expect to de- termine by means of the new 200- kilowatt transmitter is whether the hours of usefulness of pne or more of the wave bands used in long-range communication may not be length- ened and the effects of magnetic storms minimized by the use of in- creased power. R JAMES Wallington, who has been with N. B. C. for six years, has| resigned and is going to Hollywood to take a fling at the movies. Prank Singiser and Kelvin Keech, both veteran announcers, also have resigned at N. B. C. in order to free- lance. The announcers figure that with & couple of commercial pro- grams, if they are successful, they will make more money than on the regular job. LY ATE Smith has postponed signing a motion picture contract until late in the Fall because of her im- pending commercial serles which starts on Columbia October 1. * kK % DWARD Tomlinson, Latin Ameri- can authority who has just re- turned from a three and a half month trip through South America and the West Indies, will report his observations in a series of talks to begin on N. B. C. Sunday. “High- lights from Latin America” will be the subject of the broadcasts. LR 'WO outstanding international mu- sical programs are on the N. B. C. schedule. The first, September 1, will come from Berlin and feature the Berlin Radio Chamber Choir. The other, to be provided by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, will come from Hungary.
