HELP AND SITUATIONS. LOVELY LITTLE FOOL /- A Story of Washingtons Soczal Set & PHYLLIS MOORE GALLAGH E R WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE. Betsy Seymour. her brain in a whirl nd full of desperation because Marshall an Devanter whom she loved and who rofessed to love her. was cpenly attentive | o Libby Stockton at a diplomatic recep- | tion asked Raoul de Prudentio a Latin American attache to take her to his apart- | ment _instead of to her home. She wit- | nessed the theft of secret 'papers h!‘ Raoul. had seen John Storm. who once | had kissed her and told her he loved her. with another girl: had found her brother. Terry. hiding on a porch waiting for Sonia a dancer who had performed at the recep- tion. On the way to Raoul's apartment she told him that she intended getting drunk with him to drown her troubles In the apartment he tries to take her in his arms_but she wards him off and asks for a drink. Then she realizes what she is doing and while he was absent {rom the room she suddenly runs away from the place. As she comes out the door she hears the mocking. familiar voice of Libby. who had seen her ~Arriving home she met John on the doorstep. He glso was ust getting home. As she started to tell im of her escapade. out of the shadows come s deep voice. “Don’t move. or I'll 9" CHAPTER XI. ETSY'S hand tightened on| John's arm. She stood still. | her heart thumping, her eyes on his face. She saw the| hardened muscles of his lips, his gray | eyes trying to tell her not to be afraid. | Here in this quiet little Georgetown house things were happening, things that belonged to the strange tricks of her vivid imagination rather than to reality. The shadow loomed closer, & snub-nosed revolver glistening in an extended gloved hand, the wooden floor creaking with the stealthy foot- steps. | Beside them the dreaded voice spoke, biting off separate words. “Give | me that paper! I searched De Pru- | dentio’s rooms! It wasn't there. You| were with him tonight, Miss Seymour! You have it!” Ice was running through Betsy's veins as she said, her voice strange and frightened. “I—I haven't any paper. I don't know what you're | talking about.” But she did know. Everything that had happened at the legation swept vividly through her | mind. “Don't stall,” the man growled. He was so close now that both she and John could detect the strong, sharp odor of liquor on his breath. They could not see his face because his black fedora was pulled low over his eyes and his coat collar was turned up around his throat. What happened after that was done so quickly that Betsy hardly knew how it came about. Without fear or panic, John Storm wheeled | quickly and struck out at the man, | reeling him back against the door- way. His head hit the sharp edge of the wainscoting with a sickening thud and he groaned like a wounded ani- mal. Then John jumped on him as | & panther lights on a deer and they fell to the floor fighting like savages, each close upon the other’s throat, wresting with each other for posses- eion of the gun. They rolled heavily | onto the floor boards of the parlor, two powerful, big men, equally matched. John’s head crashed against the black iron coal bucket on the hearth and he lay for a second stun- ned by the blow. The man sprang away from him with a deep-throated | snarl of vengeance and climbed to his feet. But before he could turn John shot up from the hearth and lunged forward, throwing upward the gloved hand with the pistol. A belch of smoke came from be- tween their writhing bodies and the air filled with an acrid odor. The gun had been discharged . . . silently. John, holding it, staggered backward, slipped in a pool of blood and sprawled across the room. Unarmed, panic struck the other man like a stinging whip. He stumbled toward the door, | clutching his shoulder, groaning with pain; and like a terrified rat escaping | a trap that had crushed a part of | him, he fled from the house. | Something in Betsy's heart, more | than fear or anxiety, cried out mr‘ John. She started weakly toward the | parlor, her knees sagging beneath her. Bhe took two steps and with a little cry sank to the floor. For the first | time in her life she had fainted. | ‘When she opened her eyes John | was bending over her, his hand feeling | for her heartbeat through her dress. He was whispering, “Betsy! For God’s sake, Betsy, tell me you can hear me.” She felt his arms tighten about her, | felt him picking her up, carrying her to the old sofa. She yielded to his strength. Raoul was forgotten. Mar- shall was forgotten, even the man who had broken into the house was forgotten. She seemed to be floating with John on a broad and shining sea. There was nothing in the world but this man’s arrs holding her; this man’s courage and understanding wrapping her like a protecting cloak. After a while, during which she had @ssured herself that John was unhurt save the slight gash on his temple,; she told him about Raoul, the secret | tunnel that led to the chancery, her | part in the whole mysterious affair | . an innocent part that must have led up to the appearance of that des- | perate man. John, listening, his arms still around her, said: “Why did you go to Raoul's pent- house afterward, Betsy? You said that you saw me at the legation with Angelica. Did that—have anything to do with it?” Fetsy got up slowly from the sofa. What had made John think that? Had her disjointed phrases just be- fore that shadow had appeared in the doorway given him a wrong impres- sion? Because John Storm was dif- | ferent from any man she had ever known she had been swept by an emotion new to her; she had wanted to tell him all about herself—how hurt she was, how bewildered by Mar- shall’s attention to Libby and how, because of that bewilderment and out of a sort of impulsive recklessness, she had decided to go to Raoul's | pa penthouse and get drunk. She had begun by telling him that she had seen Libby and Marshall at the lega- tion, but had she begun by saying that? .She couldn't remember. o John was standing beside her, waiting for her to speak, when there was the metallic click of a key in a lock. Terry came into the hall and softly closed the door. He stood for some minutes at the foot of the stairs, worriedly beating one fist against the palm of his other hand. Then, with a sound that was part a sigh and part & groan, he climbed the stairs to his room. He didn’t look once toward the parlor. Betsy, watching Terry, was dis- turbed by something gloomy and for- bidding about his appearance—the rigid set of his shoulders, the slow movement of his feet instead of his usual brisk steps. Four o'clock was late for a young man to be returning from a date—from the right kind of date. She had said to John in a whisper, “It's funny no sone heard anythjng tonight, i#p't it? I had | telling you that you were brave and | stead, she stood at the edge of the | patches reported, the authorities were forgotten I had a family until Terry came in.” He laughed softly. “This house was built many years ago—when they really built them. The walls are solid and the ceilings high. Even if | you had screamed, I don't beueve' | your mother or father or, Tnmmy | Collins would have heard you. Why didn’t you scream, Betsy? I had an idea that all women yell out like the | very dickens when something horrible happens.” “I -as 'eyond screaming. I was out of my wits,” she said, shuddering with remembrance. Then she faced John, looking into his eyes: “Don’t ask me why I went to Raoul’s pent- house tonight. It was a silly reason. It would only embarrass me to explain | anything so stupid. I didn’t stay long enough to do myself or any one any harm. I went in, took off my coat and while he was mixing drinks . . . X I left.” ‘Without saying good-by?” “Without saying good-by,” she re- peated. “I felt too cheap to face him | because . well . . . he said some- thing ~ resented. “I understand, Betsy.” After a cogent pause, she added, “How can I ever thank you for to- | night. John? You know without my | splendid. That I am grateful.” He took her hands and held them as if he would never let them go. “Do I really deserve a regard, Betsy?” he asked, finding it difficult to keep his voice steady when her eyes were soft and blue on his face. “I mean—I weaf to kiss you.” “I suspected you might mean that. You can’t John. But shut your eyes.” | She swayed toward him, kissed him | lichtly on the lips and stood back waiting for him to open his eyes. | With a little groan John reached for | her and swept her close to his heart . 50 close that she could feel its wild | beating against her cheek. He said, | “Betsy, am I living in a fool's paradise that's going to cave in on me? What | are you going to do about me? Once again that night she yielded to the strength of his arms, felt no inclination to move out of them. She said so softly that he had to lean his head downward to hear—“I , . . wish I knew, John. I wish I knew. i And when she turned and went swiftly through the hall and up the stairs, John Storm stood there in the | deep shadows of the parlor dreaming | after her. When Betsy awakened several hours | her golden curls looking off into space. Mrs. Seymour came through the door and found her propped up onI her piliows. She didn’t stoop to kiss | her, as was her usual custom. In- | later, she lay with her hands underl bed, her face pale, her eyes wide and | | afraid. i Betsy's heart flew to her throat. | “Mother—what is it? What's | wrong?” Mother said, “Betsy, I just heard a | news flash on the radio. Raoul De | Prudentio was murdered last night!” | Murderec? Raoul- murdered!” The words came faintly, with a muffled | sob. “Oh, mother—mother!” She | turned from her, her arms flung across | the piliow, her head buried in them. She lay there sobbing, not quite be- ,lieving in death . . , at least, not death so soon after the ecstasy of | | living, loving, planning the future. For a moment Mrs. Seymour stood | looking down at Betsy, the small body wracked with sobs. Then she said with something of gentleness in her voice, “Betsy, the police are looking for a bl .d girl who was seen by an elevator boy going to his pemhnuse‘ with him last night. They found | golden strands of hair on Raoul's shoulder and . and on a table under a lamp a vanity case. A gold one with blue fo~-get-me-nots of cloisonne | on the lid.” The calmness of mother's voice broke then and she sank wearily to the foot of the bed, wringing her | gnarled work-worn hands. “Betsy . . .| that wasn’t your vainty case, was it? | .« . The one we gave you last Christ- mas?” (To be continued tomorrow.) —_— CLOSING OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IS REPORTED By the Associated Press. VIENNA, August 14.— Dispatches from Bucharest to the Reichsport 3 terday reported authorities were sup- pressing Catholic schools in Transyl- vania. The newspaper said Rumanian au- thorities were employing a “name | analysis” scheme to prevent pupils | from attending Catholic institutions. By arbitrarily classifying the pupils | according to their names as Ru- | manians or non-Rumanians, the dis- able to transfer many students from Catholic schools to state schools, en- abling them to close Catholic schools on the ground that attendance was below the minimum.
