JAZZ BAND {8} An Exciting, Ultra-Modern Love Story. By Wyatt Rundell. INSTALLMENT XVI. AUL stopped in a cigar store downtown and closeted him- self in the phone booth. When he came out he boarded a Northeast car. At a corner of St. John avenue he got off and rang the bell of a large brick house set high from the street at the end of a fiight of steep concrete steps. Y A tall lad of 20, shirtless, sun- browned, appeared and greeted him familiarly. They sat upon the steps and the banjo was produced and put through its paces by the doting owner. It passed from one to the other several times, was strummed experimentally by each, and attention was called to the famous name adorning the neck, the ease of fingering; other highly de- sirable features in banjodom. The prospect was intrigued. He said, “What d'you gotta have for it Paul?” Here the salesmanager launched into detailed information as to original cost, regret at the necessity of liqui- dation, predictions as to years of serv- ice yet remaining in the instrument, and wound up by expressing a willing- ness to sacrifice for cash. The figure named was $35. The day was won. Paul departed a few minutes later, banjoless, but folding a crisp check. He waved at the figure on the porch above. “Lots a'luck with th’ band, kid,” he | wished. Thirty minutes later Paul emerged from an elevator on the eighth floor of a Walnut street office building. He rounded a corner of the corridor and entered a broker's office. A trim, dusky-eyed girl, standing at a coun- | ter talking to two men, looked uvp and smiled at him. “Hello, Paul,” she greeted him. “Hello, Fay,” he said. *“Just a minute,” she requested. When the two men had departed she finished a note on a memo pad, then turned to him, her eyes lighting with interest. “Who's careless? smilingly. He grinned. “f am,” he admitted. *Where did you find the ring™” Her eyes crinkled at the corners. *“You'd never guess,” she confided. *Paul, surely you werer’t tight” She emphasized her words with litcle. de- cisive gestures— the ring was on—a cigar—and the cigar—was in th= bot- tom of the ash receiver. luck that we found it Mother hap- pened to see it when she emptied the tray the morning after the party “Fay,” he declared, "you're a pal” No trouble a¢ all’ she laughed. “Returning rings is right in my line. Il produce the missin’ joolery from the boss’ strong box.’ She disappeared int> the inn% of- fice with a flash of form-fitting bfack | satin. When she came back she slid a ring along th2 counter. Square-cut onyx. chip diamonds forming a lyre. “There,” she said. “How's that for integrity in a poor working girl. It's been here ever since 1 phoned you— four months ago—and how could you be so prompt, Paul?” ‘The folded her hands and regarded him severely, then lzughed at his sobered expression. “I forgot all aboat it, Fay,” he con- fessed.. “What's the storage charges?” “Oh—reasonable,” sbe smiled. “You might sing me a song on the radio— all about ‘I Don’t Kncw Why J Love You Because You Found My Ring at the Bottom of an Ash Receiver, But I Just Do'—you kncw—sometning I can throw out my chest about.” “Okay, Fay,” he laughed. ‘Any- thing you say. An' thanks a lot.” She leaned on the counter and re- garded him amusedly. “I've met your wife, Paul,” she stated. “Sue Train introduced us. Spe’s cute. How did you do it?” Paul's eyes beamed. answered. She watched him open the dour and disappear from sighe. Paul proceeded up the hill on West Twelfth and turned into a doorway. In the billiard room above, his eyes swept the groups of men that lcunged idly in the seats or followed small ivory balls around the green-topped tables. He seemed pleased to note the albino thaicn of Whitey in at- tendance. “Come on, Half Pint. Play you one game,” Paul invited. “No. Go home io your wife.” “Play you 50 t' 35. “For a buck?” “Well—yeah.” Each time Faul shot he tock de-\ liberate aim, the fingers of Lis left | hand spread uvon the green cloth. On the third fuger a large ring, square-cut onyx with glittering dia- monds in the form of a lyre, invari- ably drew the eye. Whiteys game began to get erratic. He seemed to labor under some mcatal distraction. Finslly he set his cue down. “Paul,” he said. “What'll you take for the ring?” “What ring?” Innocently. “Aw—you know. That one you got on. Th’' one I've been tryin’ to buy offa you for a coupla years.” “Listen, Whitey—for th’ Mike, don’t start thar again. I've told you I can't seil it. Why, that ring was given to my old man by Sousa, personally, for finishin' first in the finale of the ‘American Patrol.’ ” “Come off, Paul. I'm serious. she exclaimed, leaped eagerly. He “I'm still wondering,” he luvva I Too much sentiment Your shot.” “Sentiment, my eye! What'll you take for it, no joshin'?” “I'm surprised at you, Whitey. Don’t you know that persistence denotes bad breeding, uncouthness, athlete’s foot and no telling what else?” “Well, youre worse, You're ob- stinate. Come on, Paul, sell me the ring. You hardly ever wear it. I know; I watch for it.” “Whether I do or don't, little felia, It was just | came back he waved several bills tri- umphantly. Paul grasped the money, counted it, and slowly pulled the ring off his finger. He gave the impression of intense regret. The , billiard match was resumed. Paul finished his 50 points before his opponent had garnered half that amount,, then collected another dol- lar. They parted soon after. At Thirty-seventh street Paul jumped off the street car, and as he walked toward the apartment he counted a roll of bills carefully. Seventy dollars and sevepty cents. His eyes shone with satisfaction as he ran up the stairs and burst through the door noisily. Ina came from the Kitchen in a rush of sun-ripened curls and crisp gingham apron. Paul grasped her hands and pulled her down on the divan beside him. “I thought I'd never get away, honey,” he sald excitedly. “Babe and St. George go nutty when they get & pile of music in front of them. We rewrote and rearranged and revamped stuff all morning. I finally got up and walked out. Has the guy come after the rent yet?"” She shook her head. “I'm a hot one,” he rattled on. “Do you know what I forgot to do? I didn't leave you any money to pay htm with, did 1?” She smiled at him warmly. “I don't | know, darling,” she said. “I haven’t looked.” He produced the roll of bills from | his pocket. “Well, here it is. Let him | come—we're ready for him. See—| seventy bucks—I've been carryin’ it | | around ever since we figured up our | | expenses the night before we left for | the Ozarks.” A knock on the door—the landlord’s agent. Paul. a procrastinator of first water, of the retributive Miss Whitewood in the assumption of a role of hard- | working husband and provider. Sober- ed by the narrowness of his escape from exposure of a financially insol- vent condition before landlord and youthful wife, during the weeks that followed he guarded religiously against a possible repetition. Associates in- viting his participation in dice or card game, hitherto practically an in- stitution in his existence, found a deaf ear. He wrestled with and con- | quered usually gratified impulses for unfounded and rather extravagant expenditure, and in this he was aided +| by the inauguration of a weekly audit | of current assets, conducted jointly by Ina and himself promptly upon receipt of the check of Treasurer Babe Bunton. His gesture of reform was extended to the job, where, despite the lifted eyebrows of fellow bandsmen, he dis- | played a really creditable zealousness | |in his work, disregarding trenchant | comment with an air of superiority that was almost maddening. He even volunteered his services to Babe and Homer St. George in the preparation | and reconstruction of the band’s | Winter library, and, being accepted | somewhat doubtfully, amazed his men- | tors with an unsuspected adroitness and a fine degree of accuracy in the readaptation of colorless, standard orchestrations. He was enthusiasti- without hesitation, and any personal motives he may have had in elaborat- ing certain parts for B-flat bass were overlooked in Bunton’s pleasure at the new talent unearthed. The crowning triumph was a week near made a trip to Chicago in the interest of forthcoming recording contracts. The apartment on Thirty-seventh street presented a picture of serenity. Paul carried home vast piles of music and labored over it during his morn- 1y effective idea for a “hot” chorus, he explained it in enthusiastic and some- what technical detail to Ina, whose none the less flattering. She encouraged him in every way his saner views on the disbursement of their monetary resources; the growth of sincerity in his attitude as evidenced by his efforts—all these she tempt to put the old order of things behind him; the development of a maturity of purpose necessary to make a success of their marriage. It was a healing bromide to the hollowness of dufl.lumnment. instilled in her by the meeting” of the musicians’ union. Their relationship became of firmer foundation as the , Tosily- hued novelty of first association was gradually replaced by a more non- committal, though by no means sor- did, acceptance of each other. Minor disagreements, inevitable to people liv- ing within the same walls, were speed- ily settled or averted altogether through the simple expedient of con- trolling their tempers. Into such tranquillity came ghe sec- ond bombsheli! (To be continued.) Armenian Girl Good “Chuter.” Nineteen-year-old Ninel Karajyana has just qualified as Armenia’s first full-fledged woman parachute jumper, She is a student of the Erivan peda- gogical technicum, and recently com- pleted a course in parachute jumping at the Erivan Air Club. The surname Chesebrough is com- monly found in the districts of Lin- colnshire and Norfolk. The founder of the American family of Chese- brough was William, born in 1594, in Boston, Lincolnshire. In 1630 he de- cided to cast his lot with the Ameri- can Oolonists, and set sail for the New World with his wife, Anne, and his mother, Sarah, on the good ship Arabella. Nature’s Children Sea Cucumber. BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. P YOU see a creature resembling a fat worm in the waters where sea urchins, starfishes and sea lilies hold forth, the chances are | you are looking a: a sea cucumber, or Holothuria. Porsitly it is asleep, or maybe resting quietly while it di- gests its dinner. 1f it resemboles a lovely sea anemone it is out fiching. In a short time yuu can tell Ly its form, what it s doing. It is| w. the names of his wife, his mother | ¥t¢ | Junior_accountant with a !Must be experienced Chevro- {let man and have good local }in automobile parts dept.; preference given to experi- | himself with a company v You can see, by a slight stretch of your imagination, that it resembles the garden cucumber, and the lively |sea animal even has warts or but- | tons, to carry out the illusion. Sea | cucumbers have no spines, but that does not mean tney are easily im- posed upon. This 1efers to their| body make-up. Their skeleton is made | | up of anchor-shaned calcareous plales\ |all hinged toge.her in an urderly‘ | fashion to make 2 fine armor. This | 3 gives rigidity to the body and enables | | the creature ‘o stand up and also | | protects thé soft body organs. The | ruffled end is the nouth. It is a sort of featherei affair in appear- | ance, which is cue to the branchmg‘ | tentacles. Some sea cucumbers have NP "wr five double rows of tube feet down | the sides of the body. Others do| not have even one Icw. | As a rule, these cieatures are dull- sand or rocks. Sometimes you will | see them ambling painstakingly over the sandy oottom. Walking With them is a sort of worm-like move- | ment—extension and contraction of the body. The inaer surface of the tough skin coverinz the body is lined with powerful longitudinal and trans- verse muscles. So do not be puzzled | when you see friend sea cucumber | change his form when occasion de- | mands, The feathery tentacles, most often | branched, are used as organs of touch and smell, and, believe it or not, there is sometimes an ear sac at the base of | the'mouzh. The egg sacs are branched tubes. You can identify them by their bright color. They often open to the outside, close to the wreath of tentacles circling the mouth. The babies (larvae), when free swimming, are called auricula. With the deep-sea cucumber species, the eggs, and even the young, are car- ried on the mother’s back. In one species there is & brood pouch like that of our famous little sea-horse. However, the mother has the pouch, and not the father, as is true of the sea-horse. ‘Throughout all the seas you will find the strange and fascinating | cucumbers, the greatest number being in eastern seas. They like both shal- low and deep waters, and if you look in tide pools, in sands, mud, and even among the rocks, you can find them. Like their neighbors, the worms, they thrive on the organic' particles about them. The mosi unusual thing about these creatures is their habit of turning themselves literally inside out when they are startled or disturbed. It is not fatal. They go quietly to a se- cluded spot and grow a new set of “innards.” Two Eggs in One. A Dalmuir, England, housewife got &' surprise when she broke an egg into & bowl preparatory to mixing it with milk. She discovered that in addition to the usual yellow yolk and the sur- rounding white, the egg contained a smaller egg inside. When the shell of the smaller egg was burst it was found to contain only the white common to the egg. | witted and extrcmely sluggish, spend- | & ing most of their time under the = HELP—MEN.
