FINANCIAL., W.R.T.NET S0ARS ABOVE YEAR AGO Bus Line Earnings More Than Double 1934 Fig- ures During May. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Net earnings of the Washington Rapid Transit Co. in May were more than double the net income of the Sixteenth street bus line in the same month a year ago, according to the financial statement filed with the Public Utilities Commission today. It was the first May report.to be pre- sented by any of the local utility com- panies and showed a net income of $5572.40 against a net return of $2,142.52 in May of last year, a gain of $3,429.88. Washington's Rapid Transit’s oper- ating revenues in May totaled $40,- 39647 in comparison with $37,070.46 a year ago, an increase of $3,326.01. Operating expenses and taxes called for $33,051.12 against $32,767.81, an increase of $283.01, leaving an oper- ating income of $7.345.65 compared with $4.302.75 a year ago, or an ad- vance of $3,040. Non-operating income was prac- tically the same as a year ago. Gross stood at $7,416.93, while deductions from gross amounted to $1,844.53 against the higher figure in May, 1934, of $2,238.29, and leaving the above noted marked increase in net Tevenues. For the first five months of this year the bus company reported oper- ating revenues of $192,292.84, an oper- ating income of $28,586.72 after de- duction .of operating expenses and taxes, and a total net income of $19,- 745.67 against $9,862.06 a year ago in the same perlod, or a gain of $9.883.61. All the company reports are now well in the black figures, a very different story from two or three years ago. In those days nearly every report drew quite heavily on the red ink. Heavy Demand for Bonds. The Washington Stock Exchange opened the week with one of the biggest bond trading days in months, some $35,000 in senior securities changing hands. The day's heaviest trading was in Capital Traction 5s, 2 $20,000 turnover showing a half point advance in the price. These bonds opened at 96! and closed at 97, Anacostia & Potomac R. R. 5s fig- ured in three $3,000 sales at 88, up 5. Washington Ges Light 5s appeared on the board at 1057; and 106, around the high mark for the present year. City & Suburban 5s Sigured in a $10,000 transaction at 87. Capital Trensit stock opened the week with a 100-share sale at 181, eight more shares sellng slightly lower. Washington Railway & Elec- tric preferred moved at 106, a new high for 1935. Lanston Monotype stock was strong again today, sales being recorded at 61. Commission Amends Form A2, The Securities and Exchange Com- mission has adopted a rule under the securities act of 1933 amending in several respects the instruction book for form A-2 for corporations. The rule for the use of form A-2 was amended to make the form avail- able for use by any corporation filing profit and loss statements for three years, if it has furnished financial statements to its security holders an- nually for 10 years, or has shown a net income for any two of the last five years, except if it was organized within 10 years and issued a majority of its capital stock, or paid more than one- half of the proceeds thereof, to pra- moters for property or services. Prior to the amendment the form was applicable only if the corporatiou within the last 15 years had paid divi- dends upon any class of common stock for at least two consecutive years, Railroad Women Hold Big Jobs. Many railroad women employes have earned for themmselves interest- ing jobs according to the seventh an- nual women's number of the Balti- more & Ohio magazine. Ellen Raymond is assistant general freight agent, Green Bay & Western Railroad; Frances Dorothy Allen is interior decorator for the New York Central; Pearl Andrews is in charge of cookery on New Haven dining cars; Dr. Catherine Lankford is surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad; Daryle Heckman, Somerset, Pa., is law coun- sel for the Baltimore & Ohio, which also boasts seven women passenger representatives, a woman chief clerk of its law department and Olive W. Dennis, engineer of service. Jane Ogle is train hostess, Atlan- tic Coast Line; Carpenter Kendall is editor in chief of the Milwaukee Mag- azine, and Martha Moore edits the Frisco Lines Magazine. Brokerage Business Picks up. Daily stock and.bond quotations are being watched much more closely -in Washington’s New York Stock Exchange offices than they have been for several months. The attendance in the board rooms has doubled in the last two weeks and the gossip is very much more cheerful. Brokers here report that orders are on the increase, this announcement being supported by the volume figures for the whole country. The public is not jumping back into the market, but cautious investment is said to be growing steadily and the “in and out traders” are considerably more active. The recent improvement in both prices and volume was bound to be reflected by renewed Wall Street in- terest both in New York and else- ‘Wwhere. There is always a Summer lull in the stock market. Some market ob- servers are now predicting that the let-up this year may be less pro- nounced than usual. They base the assertion on the upward trend which has prevailed for the last month and partly on the apparent changed atti- tude in Congress toward the utility Novel Check Plan Adopted. Reports from New York state that the National Safety Bank & Trust Co. will inaugurate a revolutionary new system designed to aid the small de- positor Wednesday in the so-called “checkmaster plan.” The bank will charge 5 cents for each item depos- ited and for each check issued. The minimum balance will be dropped, as will the service charge. The only charge now will be the 5-cent per item ‘commission. Leo T. Crowley, chairman of the Pederal Deposit Insurance Corp., is- sued a statement today saying that insurance of bank deposits does not two | THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. MONDAY, JUNE 24, 1935.
