DESCENT IS TEST INSTRATO FLIGHT Avoiding Crash Will Be Most Difficult Feature of Bal- loon Journey. The most difficult and dangerous part of the impending flight of the National Geographic Society-Army Air Corps stratosphere balloon, Ex- plorer II, to what is expected to be the greatest height ever attained by man, will not come in the mysterious and unknown stratosphere but on the late return to earth, officials of the society explained yesterday. The crew of the huge balloon, Capt. Albert W. Stevens and Capt. Orvil An- derson, will seek to attain an altitude of approximately 14 miles. They will go to the highest possible safe alti- tude, it was explained, but must guard against going ‘oo high, for to do so would mean an inevitable crash when they returned to earth. The balloon will rise until it reaches “pressure height,” the level at which THE SUNDAY - STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., JUNE 23, 1935—PART ONE. the helium gas has expanded until it completely fills the balloon into & sphere. -To go much higher the crew would have to lighten the balloon by dropping ballast. Should they drop too much, they would be unable to check the speed of their descent and prevent a crash. Balance Is Real Test. The delicate feat of balancing lift- ing power of the balloon against the weight of the ballast is one of the most important confronting the bai- loonists. Superheat, or the heat ab- sorbed “rom the sun by the gas, will play a leading role in the stratosphere flight. Superheat represents the dif ference in temperature between the gas in the balloon and the air outside, and will add greatly to the lifting power of the gas. Superheat, on the other hand, will make the downward trip more diffi- cult, it was explained. As the bal- loonists valve gas and begin to de- scend the gas in the bag will contract and become still warmer and also will begin to absorb heat reflected from the earth., This warming will in- crease the lifting power of the gas and more gas will have to be valved to keep the balloon moving down- ward. ‘When the balloon leaves the strato- sphere, where temperatures remain always constant, however, the out- side air will begin to grow warmer as the bag descends and the heat of the sun will become less, Then the bal- loon will lose its superheat and be- gin to fall faster and faster. This must be checked by dropping ballast in sufficient quantities to retain con- trol, and plenty of ballast must be avaflable. Will Choose Landing Site. At the height of about 1,000 feet the two veteran officers will drop enough ballast to bring the balloon to a virtual stop. Then they will look for a good landing place in opea country and drop to it by holding the gas valves wide open. Should the balloon come down through a cloud bank, the difficulty of the landing would be considerably increased, it was explained, as the balloon would lose its superheat very rapidly as soon as it entered the clouds. This would cause a sudden increase in the speed of fall and would require the expenditure of much more ballast to check it. Re- serve ballast will be carried to pro- vide for such an emergency. o Bridge Stones to Be Sent.
