First printed coples of the twen- tieth annual report of the Federal Re- serve Bank of Richmond, just re- ceived here, show that at the begin- ning of 1834 there were 415 member banks in the fifth reserve district and that during the year 26 additional memberships were registered, of which 21 were newly-organized national banks and five State banks. Nearly all of the new national banks re- placed banks in the hands of con- servators. During 1934 there were 38 banks lost to the system because of liquidations, consolidations and with- drawals, resulting in a decrease of 12 members when the year ended, leav- ing a total of 403. Business and financial trends are wvividly pictured in the report prepared by W. W. Hoxton chairman and agent, and compared with conditions in the previous year. The report re- veals many striking percentage changes. For example, debits to in- dividual accounts were up 20 per cent, commercial failures and aggregate lia- bilities declined 43 and 63 per cent, respectively, insolvencies were the lowest since 1920, and liabilities lowest of any year since 1929. Consumption of cotton dropped 16 per cent, largely because of strike, while tobacco manufacturing was far above the 1933 rate. Construction im- proved, and as noted early this year, retail and wholesale trade and collec- tions were all well above the previous year. The Western drought helped prices for Eastern farmers, thus off- setting acreage reduction. Business Volume Higher. The Richmond Reserve Bank han- dled a larger volume of business in 1934 than in the previous year, not- withstanding the vast amount of work incident to the banking holiday in 1933, Mr. Hoxton says. The aumber of non-cash collections handled for | member banks declined by 10.5 per cent, but the amount involved in the collections rose over 27 per cent. Transfers for member banks de- creased, but again the amouurs in- volved increased. The number of checks handled by the transit department was up 20.46 per cent and the aggregate amount involved up 25.83 per cent. Cyr- rency received and counted in 1934 exceeded the 1933 figure by 632 per cent in the number of pieces, but off 13 per cent in amount. The number of securities handled rose 12068 per cent last year, compared with 1033, while the value of the securities han- dled increased by 77.72 per cent. Total earnings of the Federal Re- serve Bank of Richmond and to show a profit of $14,298, which amount was added to surplus. Cur- rent expenses of the bank in 1934 e: ceeded expenses in 1933 by $89 Chairman Hoxton's report examination department, an iucrease | in the Richmond bank’s share in| Federal Reserve Board expenses and | contribution to the retirement system | of reserve banks. First Loans to Industry. For the first time the bank started in 1934 making loans direct to indus- try. Applications amounting to $10,- | 765,819 were received, of which $5,- 678,150 were approved, $4.023,168 re-| Jjected, $1,084,500 still under conslderv ation at the end of the year, and $1,- 560,150 actually made and the funds advanced. The number of checks handled dur- ing the year was the largest on record | ‘with the exception of 1929. The bank | did an immense amount of work | during the year in connection with the | handling of gold settlements. The} daily circulation of Federal Reserve notes was up 4.5 per cent over the 1933 average. There were no changes in the offi-| cial personnel in Richmond. or in the | Baltimore or Charlotte branches. The | total number of officers employed in | the three offices at the end of the| year was 740, a decrease of 6 as com- | pared with the close of the previous year. Of the total number of em- ployes at the end of the year, 121 were assigned to special work for the Re-| construction Finance Corp., which re- | imburses the bank in full for their salaries, according to the Federal Re- | serve agent. Capital Transit stock figured in two small lot sales, both at 172, a new low on the present move. The re- maining trading was confined to Mer- genthaler Linotype, which recorded four 10-share tremsactions,-all at 26% There were no important changes in bid and asked prices on other issues. NEW YORK, May 13.—A late buying flurry in the motors put life in the stock market today after the list had milled about diffidently during the early hours. * Preferred sugar issues and other specialties also developed strength, although many of the lead- ers were restrained by profit taking. The close was steady. Transfers ap- proximated 1,100,000 shares. 2 Constructive news items aided mar- ket sentiment. The American Iron & Steel Institute estimated current mill operations at 43.4 per cent of capacity, against 42.2 in the previous week. At the same time. grains sagged on im- proved crop weather reports. Cotton was also backward. Secondary rail bonds did better and sterling was strong in foreign exchange dealings. Silver mining shares were a trifle heavy, along with some of the util- ities. American Crystal Sugar pre- ferred was up around 6 points and the preferred issue of Cuban-American Sugar gained 2. Air Reduction jumped 5 and advances of fractions to around a point were registered by Union Pacific, New York Central, Great Northern, Anaconda, Great Western Sugar, American Sugar Re- fining, General Motors, Chrysler, In- ternational Nickel, Ohio Oil, United States Pipe & Foundry and Eastman Kodak. New York Cotton By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 13.—Moderate declines in cotton today under liqui- dation, foreign selling and hedging were followed by partial recoveries on trade and local buying. Trading was less active and there was a disposition to await develop- | ments. July rallied from 11.85 to 11.91, with the market generally 3 to 10 points net lower at the beginning of the last hour.
