MACKAYE URGES NATIONAL THEATER " Advocates Artfor Art’s Sake | Before House Committee on Patents. BY WILL P. KENNEDY. Pleading for establishment of a national theater in Washington where the great plays of the future can be produced, Percy MacKaye, author of “Wakefleld,” the festival produced during the Washington Bicentennial celebration, yesterday told the House Committee on Patents: . “We have to cater to the gutter with sensuous, voluptuous plays. We should have a theater where the light of young genius can aspire to see his work carried out as he envisioned it, not as it is rewritten by a producer who has eyes only for the box office.” Urges Art for Art's Sake. Under the chairmanship of Repre- sentative William I. Sirovich, Demo- crat, of New York, who is himself & dramatist, the House Patents Com- mittee is conducting hearings on a bill to establish a new department of science, art and literature. The goal of a national theater, free from the necessity of making money and which would be established for the production of art for art's sake, ‘Mr. MacKaye said, “has been a dream wINNERS ANNOUNCED fostered ever since the stage began | its tumultuous career in this country.” He emphasized that one of the ° most important essentials for develop- ment of art in the theater is to foster @ relationship between play, actor and | audience. In contrast he pointed out that the film industry's sequences | held for the Fauquier Tuberculosis As- are unrolled in reel after reel, utterly | sociation were Andrew Bartenstein, | oblivious to the applause or temper | of the audience.
