In spite of yesterday's holiday on the Washington Stock Exchange, the total week's business was well up to recent levels, which are ahead of last | year. Growing interest in the blue chip stocks, those seliing at 100 per share or higher, has been noted in recent trading sessions. During the past week Washington Railway & Electric preferred stock has sold up to 104, which is the high mark for the year. Potomac Electric Power 51 per cent preferred shares sold this week at 115 and 115, the latter quo- tation also being the 1935 peak in this 8% 6% Afliated Prod lGOc 118 104% Air Reduction (3).. 1% % Air-Way Elec Appl. issue. The last sale in Potomac | Power's 6 per cent preferred stock was made at the high mark of 111. Riggs National Bank preferred dm‘k 1 sold this week at 111 and the same | bank’'s common stock brought 216 in | a small transaction. Other bank | shares were quiet. | In the miscellaneous list of shares selling under 100, there was a good deal of activity in Capital Transit. It sold under 20 for the first time this year. Mergenthaler Linotype was one of the most active of the cheaper stocks, again changing hands freely at 30. Lanston Monotype came out at 50. Bonds were in greater demand than stocks. Capital Traction 5s recorded many good sized sales at 99 after re- cently touching 100. The demand was good for Washington Gas Light 6s, Series B, at 104; these bonds maturing next year. Washington Gas 5s, 1958, are also strong, selling in the past few | days at 105, the 1935 top. Only re- cently Washington Gas 5s, 1960, moved | at 115. During the week Barber & Ross @138 appeared on the sales sheet in a $1,000 transfer at 20 and D. C. Paper Manufacturing Co. 6s figured in a $1,000 sale at 162 and another $1,000 transaction at 16%. The majority of bonds on the Exchange, however, are selling at much higher prices, more than half of them above par. Large Attendance Forecast. Plans for the annual Spring dinner of the District Bankers' Association, set for mext Friday night at the Co- lumbia Country Club, have progressed far enough to indicate an attendance of about 200 bank officials and bank directors. Reservations have been arriving in large numbers, the Dinner Committee reports. ‘There will be many Government officials among the guests, largely from the Treasury Department, as is the case every year. The dinner is given mainly to step up interest in the Bankers' Association annual con- | vention. As general convention chair- man, Hilleary G. Hoskinson will out- line “in a few well chosen words” the arrangements which have already been made for the Hot Springs conclave. | President F. P. H. Siddons will announce details regarding the pro- gram for the Spring dinner very shortly. The usual golf tournament will be held on the Columbia links in the afternoon and the prizes awarded in the evening. Sanitary Bonds Awarded. Officials of the Washington Subur- ban Sanitary Commission were much ! pleased over the sale of $250,000 series | | GG 4'2 per cent Sanitary District bonds at $107.278 per $100 bond. The issue was awarded to Brown, Harri- man & Co., Inc. There were eight other bidders. The accepted bid was the highest ever made on these bonds. There were five bids which were above 105. The last previous issue of Sanitary Com- mission bonds were sold last October at 10244, The bonds, which are subject to approval by the Maryland Public Service Commission, will be dated April 1, mature in 50 years and are callable in 30 years. Proceeds from the issue, which will provide the commission nearly $268,.- 000, will be used for water and sewer extensions in Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties. The bids were opened and the award made at the head office of the commission in the Tower Building in | this city. National Dairy Sales Gain. Thomas H. McInnerney, president| of National Dairy Products. said in Chicago that sales so far this year are about the same as & year go. Con- sumption of milk is not increasing. but prices are a little higher. Business seems a little better all around, both in sales and net profit than a year ago. he said. In answer to a question, Mr. Mc- Innerney said some consideration has been given to refunding of bonds at a lower rate, but this will probably be_taken up at a later time. National Dairy has two units in Washington and the stock is widely distributed in the Capital. A year ago last Winter the head of the company spent many weeks in Washington as- sisting in the administration of the code in the dairy industry. Heard in Financial Distriet. All the banks have been notified of the latest $50.000,000 offering of Treasury bills, to be dated April 24, 1935, and maturing January 22, 1936. Tenders will be received by the Fed- eral Reserve Banks up to Monday afternoon. The Washington office of Fenner & Beane, New York Stock Exchange firm, announces that the company is starting an industries service for clients. The service aims to keep up with the developments in 28 impor- tant industries, covering price ranges, dividends and earnings. Pennsylvania Railroad’s net earnings for the first two months of this year were equal to 6 cents a share (par value $50) on the capital stock, com- pared with 15 cents a share in the corresponding two months last year. Passengers carried by Atlantic Coast Line Railroad during 1934 aggregated 2,142,470, a gain of 86.6 per cent over the 1,148,132 carried in the previous year. The $5035918 revenue from this source was 19.2 per cent higher than the $4,223,523 of 1933, it is stated in the road’s annual report. Nearly 3,500 dividend checks for depositors in the insolvent Northeast and Washington Savings Banks have not been claimed, Receiver Norman R. Hamilton reports. The last pay- ment declared by the banks involved & 10 per cent payment. Today's trading on the Washington Exchange was confined almost wholly to bonds. Washington Gas 5s, 1960, commanded 115%; while Washington Gas 6s, Series B, closed the week at 104. Washington Gas 5s, 1958, were in still beter demand, bringing 105 on five consecutive $1,000 sales. Capital Traction 5s maintained their recent price of 99. Three $1,000 trans- actions and one $500 sale were re- corded on sales sheet at that figure. They closed with the week with 98%2 bid and 100 asked. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, April 20.—The stock market struck a fast upward gait to- day as traders returned from their Good Friday holiday in a decidedly | bullish mood. Gains of 1 to nearly 3 points were numerous despite some | late profit taking. The close W fairly strong. Transfers approximated 1,000,000 shares. It was one of the liveliest Saturday sessions in about a year. The indus- trials, especially those of the invest- 10% +1% | ment type, showed the widest ad- ]y- | vances, although the rails and utilities 4 | were firm. + % | _While most of the commodity ex- 2 | changes did not reopen, the grain pit + | at Chicago resumed business with the +11; | leading cereals jumping a cent or + ' | more a bushel in the first hour. Eu- + 's | ropean markets, with the exception of London money and oils, were still closed and foreign exchanges did It- tle. Bonds improved considerably. . Among the most active share gainers were American Telephone, Chrysler, | General Motors, U. S. Steel, Bethle- 3 | hem, Case, International s, | U. S. Smelting, Allied Chemis - 15 | daille-Hershey, Santa Fe, Woolworth, 3 | Columbian Carbon and Westinghouse. Financial observers expressed the | opinion that investment demand was % | the most important equity influence 'a| of the day with inflation-mindedness apparently wholly subordinated. The silver buying program and other in- flationary factors, it was pointed out, seemed to have been pushed into the ! background by the cheapest moneyv 1 | rates in history and the desire of in- +11 | Vestors to get idle funds working even + | at extremely low pay. The motor field attracted attention when Cram'’s estimated output for the + % | week ending today at 110.235 unit: +1 | the highest weekly production so far o this year. This compares with 109.- * 537 units in the previous week and = 91224 in the corresponding 1934 week. | The Commerce Department reported that March factory sales of automo- biles totaled 429,830 units, the largest for any month since April, 1930. +1 -2 e A + NEW YORK BAR SILVER.
