S. Boost. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 11.—A further world-wide rise in silver prices and acceleration of production was seen in Wall Street today as the probable consequences of the Treasury boost in | its price for newly-mined silver from domestic mines to 71 cents an ounce. ‘The world price quickly resumed its climb. Foreign bar silver for com- mercial use in New York sold at 66 cents an ounce, up 1% cents from yesterday’s final bid of 645 cents, and the highest since 1926. Later Handy & Harman, leading bullion brokers, posted a price of 65 cents. In London the price rose 3 of a penny to 2911-16 pence per ounce, equivalent to 64.745 cents an ounce in New York, based on the opening rate for sterling. Silver dealers here said D. C., THURSDAY, the London price would probably ad- just itself gradually to New York. Pflu mn-t st-e. l'll. mlnes u me hl.h-t prlea they have received since 1925, and higher than the average for any full year since 1920, which was the fag end of the post-war inflation. That had carried the price in 1919 to a peak for 40 years or so at $1.37%. ‘The 71-cent-an-ounce price for sil- ver was explained as affecting only a small part of world production—that from American mines. But in view of the fact that the jump in price to American mines was prompted by the climbing world price, which, in turn, was attributed chiefly to foreign pur- chases by the United States Treasury, Wall Street silver dealers thought it was another major step in Washing- ton’s program of restoring silver to an important monetary position. How high the price might event- ually go was said to be largely a mat- ter of guesswork, dependent upon the final decisions in Washington and a number of incalculable factors, chiet among them being the price which would bring a large part of the silver hoards of the Far East onto the mar- ket. Effects Are Widespread. It was pointed out, however, that the statutory price for silver, based upon the amount of silver in the sil- ver dollar, and now purely a theo- retical price, was $1.29 an ounce. Furthermore, mining experts here APRIL 11, 1935, sald that there were many small min- In( mperflel in the West which could be profitably operated with silver mlu:l: under a dollar an ounce, and they thought the pressure from the silver mining could scarcely be expected to abate until silver gets within striking dis- tance of the statutory price. Thus far, monetary experts said the silver program was not partic- ularly inflationary, but they saw in h. distinctly inflationary possibilities if vigorously pursued over a consid- erable period. Possible repercussions from sbroad were awalted with interest. It was ‘pointed out that the rise in the price of silver had already embarrassed the banking community in Shanghai, where the currency has been on an actual silver basis, but that the sit- uation had been brought under par- tial control by the imposition of a silver export tax. London Price Soars. LONDON, April 11 (#).—The price of silver today touched the highest mark in nine years, bringing 29 11-16 pence an ounce, % penny higher than yes- terday, owing chiefly to President Roosevelt's announcement of increased buying price. This stimulated buying in China and India by speculators who steadily have been absorbing the metal here in the past few days on the assumg- tion the United States, which hith- erto has been supporting the price, would continue to do so.
