BY RADER WINGET, Associated Press Pinancial Writer, NEW YORK, April 10.—Railroad investment quarters have pinned their hopes for greater earnings on an increase in freight traffic. ‘Weekly reports on car loadings, in- dicating revenue to railroads from hauling freight, have assumed an in- terest equal to that shown in the eventual fate of the railroad retire- ment act and the battle which some believe may develop over wages. In the 13 weeks that car loadings have been reported this year there were eight increases, compared with 10 increases for the same period last vear, but the latest weekly total was 617,000 cars, against a comparable 1934 total of 608,000. Some analysts, however, discount past actions and contend the trend of freight move- ment in the next few months will be of more importance. Rate Increases Qffset. Enthusiasm over the recent Inter- mu Commerce Commission decision authorizing freight rate increases of some 385,000,000 a year was dis- ration April 1 of the 10 per cent wage cut which went into effect early | in 1932, The new rates, expected to become effective April 18, will run to June | 30, 1936. Benefits, it was pointed out, | will be mostly to Eastern roads, espe- cially those having heavy coal shlp-v ments. Restoration of the last portion of the 10 per cent wage cut added about $156,000,000 to $160,000,000 to the an- | nual wage bill of roads, most of which | was being paid by the roads at the | start of 1935, It has been conceded in some Wall | Street quarters that carriers will ask‘ for a 10 per cent (some say a 15 per cent) wage cut May 1, although the | freight rate addition has been cited as A potent weapon of labor chiefs in | fighting the proposal. Await Court Decision. | B Both rail officlals and labor leaders | are awaiting the decision of the Su- preme Court on the retirement act. If | the act is upheld, the roads will have an additional expense of about $60,- 000,000 a year, which could be cited as | & reason for a wage reduction; on the | other hand, labor leaders are expected | ! to utilize an adverse decision as an | argument against any cut proposed. The railroads are attaching impor- | tance to decisions of the Interstate Commerce Commission on extensions | | of loans and new loans from the Re- construction Pinance Corporation. Of- ficial announcement was made this week of the Interstate Commerce Commission’s decision to extend Re- | construction Finance Corporation's | loans of the New York Central and | Baltimore & Ohio and grant a new | loan to the B. & O. The Reconstruction Finance Cor- poration has indicated its willingness to help carriers over temporary handi- caps, provided, however, adequate se- | | curity is available, ———— DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED YORK.
