NEW YORK, April 10.—Improve~ ment in rails and ofl shares gave ihe stock market a steadier tone in late dealings today after profit taking had 7 7| unsettled the entire list in early deal- gs. Amerada Corp. and International Business Machines were about 2 American Telephone and Du Pont were among others dragging. The late tone was fairly steady. Sales aggregated 900,000 shares. Metal stocks, star performers in the previous session, apparently ignared two extremely important factors at the start. Shortly after this announcement the price of foreign bar silver for domestic use was ad- vanced 1ls cents an ounce in New York to 645 cents, or within 33 of a cent an ounce of the present Gov- ernment figure. United States Smelt- ing was again the most active issue and extended early fractional losses o around a point by midday. Cerro de Pasco, Howe Sound and Americen Smelting were about even The increase of around 85,000 tons {in shipments of United States Stecl Corp. in March were about in line with expectations and failed to root this group out of its narrow groove. United States Steel and Bethlehem each were a shade lower, Other industrials dip- ping included Du Pont, J. I. Case, Gen- eral Electric and Westinghouse, New York Cotton By the Associated Press.
