COURAGE IS URGED AS BUSINESS CURE Advertising Expert Denies N. R. A. Has Tied Hands of Merchants. What American busincss needs to- day is a little old-fashioned fighting courage, Kenneth Collins, assistant to the president of Gimbel Brothers and well-known advertising _expert, told members of the Washington Advertis- ing Club at a luncheon meeting in the National Press Club auditorium yes- terday. “All of us in business—advertising men, merchants, manufacturers—are guilty of the same heresy to our own traditions,” Colilns said. “We are playing the game so safely, so de- fensively, that we are doing practi- ! cally nothing to help in the great work of business recovery. “N. R. A. hasn’t tied our hands. We have tied our own. Wrapped them up snugly in the mittens of in- ertia. We are afraid to speak out a good ringing, ‘Yes, let’s try it.’ to any- thing different or novel or unusual or experimentai. “This is the moment when a busi- | ness man with vision and imagination is going to go places if he will only get moving. This is the time the adver- tising man with nerve can hit the high spots quickly if he will only get | going. For, frankly, he has prac- tically no competition today.” ITHE WEATH Rl ‘ District of Columbia—Occasional rain tonight and tomorrow, slightly ! warmer tomorrow, lowest temperature | tonight about 46 degrees; colder late | tomorrow night; gentle easterly winds. becoming moderate southeast and south tomorrow. ] Maryland and Virginia—Occasional rain tonight and tomorrow; slightly warmer tomorrow, colder late tomor- Tow night. | West, Virginia—Occasional rain to- night and tomorrow; warmer in west | portion tonight, colder tomorrow m"m. and in west portion late tomorrow afternoon. By the Associated Press. ABOARD UNITED STATES FLEET SUBMARINE NARWHAL, off South- ern California, March 19.—America’s lone wolves of the high seas slipped silently out to deep water yesterday to test their fangs and sharpen their claws. The Narwhal, ranked among the world’s largest and iost powerful undersea cruisers, is one of six big submarines of mighty Division 12, which wiil play an imporiant role in forthcoming maneuvers of the United States Fleet in the North Pa- cific. ‘Their commodore applied the name lone wolves to these big submarines, which went through secret gunnery exercises yesterday at the San Cle- mente naval drill grounds in the Pacific, off the coast of Southern California. Command Is Powerful. Submarine Division 12 is rated as one of the most powerful commands in the world for submarine warfare The PALAIS ROYAL Introduces a thrilling new Beautifier NO MORE COARSE PORES S Dioxogen Cream is a brilliant beauty discovery, recommended by Good Housekeeping. The divers are the Nautilus and Narwhal, 371 feet in length, with 6-inch guns on fore and after decks; the 341-footers Bar- racuda and Bass, the 307-foot Dolphin and the newest of them all, the 260-foot Cachalot. True to their roles of lone wolves, the Lig submarines went separate | ways after leaving San Diego Harbor | early in the morning, and maneuvered individually. Details of the ma- neuvers are naval secret, this being one of the closing features of the annual target practices of the sub- marines. These fleet submarines are regarded as one of the most feared weapons of high seas warfare. Their cruising radius is some 12,000 miles, enabling them to seek out for destruction a dreadnaught in any part of the Seven Seas. With a surface cruising speed upward of 18 knots and a fast underwater speed, they form a marked contrast to the U-boats of two decades ago. WASHINGTON. Such diving cruisers as the Narwhal and Nautilus carry 88 officers and men. They glide through the ocean like great fish, under power of big Diesel engines of some 6,000 horse- power. It is uncanny to hear the command to dive, and to go down through the hatches from the comfortable bridge. With the hatches fastened, the crews in the control room man the great wheels and valves. The hands of the 20-inch gauges show the dropping into the depths of the sea. In the conning tower, the com- mander is at the periscope control and the great 371-foot cruiser be- comes an underwater fish. Forward and aft, the torpedo crews are at station in the torpedo rooms, the larg- est compartments of the ships. ‘When the order comes to surface |for gunnery, the crews of the 6-inch rifles go to the forward and aft hatches, ready to leap out to the decks while they are still awash and fire | the long-range 10-ton rifles which hurl | shells weighing 105 pounds. These rifles are heavier than those carried by destroyers and similar to those of the light cruisers, while the undersea cruiser has the vastly su- perior element of surprise, the abile ity to surface and fire and then quickly dive out of sight, having the range of its target before it surfaces. Its real weapons, the torpedoes that have a range of 9 miles or more, are shrouded in secrecy.
