OLUMBIA has arranged to bring from London this Sum- mer, three of the major events of King George’s silver jubllee —a celebration designed to mark ‘the twenty-fifth anniversary of the coronation of the British mon- arch. ‘Through a special series of interna- tional relays, Columbia will bring to its American audience the most color- ful highlights of the festival. The first broadcast, May 5, will be a de- scription of a special church service by the Archbishop of Canterbury, which King George and other mem- bers of the royal family will attend. On the second day of the inaugural ) | festivities, May 6, the King himself will speak from Buckingham Palace, following a review of his reign by an- nouncers of the British Broadcasting p. ‘The third and final broadcast of the series, May 9, will originate in West- minster Hall, where King George will again speak, following brief addresses by members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. * k k% NTO the depth of the Grand Canyon, N. B, C. will take a micro- phone for the first time April 21 to broadcast an impressive Easter sun- rise service. The Bishop of the Arizona Diocese of the Episcopal Church will conduct the service, aided by three assistants and a 40-voice mixed A Capella Choir of the Arizona State Teachers’ College. * X k x commercial broadcasts to its schedule, the first, a new “Moon Dial,” conducted by Arthur Godfrey, will start tonight at 11. This program will be patterned after God- frey’s daily “Sun Dial” series, but it will be on the air only three nights a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The other two consist of a recorded feature called “Makers of History,” and a Sunday afternoon recital by i W.!sv has added three more Marie Deal, soprano, accompanied by Elsie Harvey Weaver, organist. “The Makers of History” is in- tended especially for children, and will be a marked contrast to some of the sensational “blood and thun- der” serials. It will be based chiefly on the outstanding episodes in Colon- ial history. * K ok X OST of the comment publicly M available as to the nearness of television continues some- what pessimistic. Paley, president of Columbia, says in his annual report: “While progress has been and will be made in the technical development of television, there are many other problems to be solved.” * % & & HREE unknown lyricists—one a business college girl, another a fireman in an oil refining plant, and the a third a master sergeant of the Quartermaster Corps—will have their original song lyrics presented by Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians during their broadcast on Columbia, March 28. ‘The three lyricists, Merrill Riesbeck of Winters, Calif.; James B. Judge of Denver, Colo., and Jack Hampton of Port Arthur, Tex., won the honor of having their works presented by Waring’s Pennsylvanians as the resuit of winning a Nation-wide contest con- ducted by a magazine, Judge, incidentally, was in Wash- ington several years ago, and partici- pated in several amateur shows, in- cluding “Believe Me, Zantippe.” 409-11th ST.NW. Sales of the Government's new “baby bonds” during the first 14 days totaled $23,183,953, it was announced by the | ‘Treasury. This total is expected to be swelled considerably, it was said, as many large cities and several thousand small post offices have yet to make their Teports. ‘There have been 48,461 individual buyers, averaging $438 apiece, the Treasury said, but added that al- though this indicates that the demand for the larger denominations is strong, postmasters report that the purchase of the $25, $50 and $100 Units was beginning to increase.
