Washington Wayside Random. Observations of Interesting Events and Things. GIANT TREASURE. ’ ACING the Chinese ceremonial gateway in the west caur!yard‘ of the National Museum fis| what is familiarly known as the “circus tent.” Beneath its billowing folds is the skull of a 68- foot bowhead whale, captured off Tglurak Island, near Point Barrow, | Alaska, September 14, 1931. Since Armistice day, 1932, that skull | has been oozing whale oil, and, ac- cording to Remington Kellogg, as- sistant curator at Smithsonian, it probably will be there another two or! three years—until the odor has dis- appeared entirely and the skeleton can be brought inside for exhibition | mounting. James A. Ford, ethnologist of the | Institution, with Frank Brower, a | trading post proprietor, harpooned | the whale, a type fast becoming ex-| tinct and hence very valuable. The | skull alone weighs 3,440 pounds. The flesh was removed by the Eskimos for | food before the specimen was shipped here. Twice a year the skull is scrubbed with soapsuds and coarse brushes Every particle of oil which has per- meated the surface is carefully washed away. But still minute oil globules form, and drip, and many a going over | the old bones must receive before they can be set up inside the building. * SHARP SHOOTING. HE story is being told in J. Edgar Hoover's Bureau of Investigation | of the astounding score made by one of the bureay’s sharpshooters in a recent machine gun practice. This agent, it is declared, fired 20 shots at a terget and, on examining | the bulls-eye, found 35 bullet holes | in it. ‘proxmntely 33,000,000 telephones in TELEPHONICS. ID you know that—-? Washington telephone service was established December 1, 1878, with 25 telephones connected with a smail switchboard located at 1423 G street and Burpect L. Nevius, | 204 East Underwood street, Chevy Chase. Md., was the operator. Washington has 190,259 of the ap- the world. Washingtonians make approxi- mately 750,000 calls per day. Telephone service was established between Washington and theg follow- ing cities on the dates inGicated: Baltimore, July 25, 1883; New York, December 31, 1885; San Francisco, January 25, 1915; London, February 5. 1927, Madrid, October 13, 1928, and Tokio, December 7, 1934. ‘The first sentence ever’ spoken over | the telephone was on March 10, 1876, when the inventor, Alexander Graham | Bell, said: “Mr. Watson, come here, 1 want you” to Thomas A. Watson, his assistant in the little Boston workshop. * ¥k Kk ¥ STRANGER. His clothes are shabby, and his crushed hat covers the white hair of age, but he ignores the flutter of snow or the diagonals of rain. ‘When he reaches the spot he alyays seeks he stops and faces the White House, takes off his hat, places it over his breast and closes his eyes. His lips move silently. After a moment he opens his eyes upward to the sky and makes the sign of the cross. Then he shuffles ‘back to the streets and be- ! Sultan, Engineer Commissioner, was a little' late for a speaking en- gagement. When he arose to talk, he realized, too, he must prepare for an early exit. But the colonel is clever This is what he said: “A number of years ago I was sta- tioned in Nicaragua, where they have many odd customs which Americans hardly understand. For instance, there the man is absolute ruler—dominating his home in every way. “Now in America things are some- | what different. My wife told me on ! arrival home this evening that 1 am | scheduled to remain for dinner with | guests, but my secretary already had contracted me for this talk, so there we were. I left home in ill repute, vou might say. Perhaps if I had stayed | in Nicaragua more than just two years | I might have started to get the upp-r | hand in my own family.” The colonel shook his head sadly. “But a fellow ' never knows.” Navy Cook Found Dead.
