INCOME LEVY Modified Plan for Center Drawn by City Heads Is Approved. ‘The Society of Natives of the Dis- trict of Columbia last night unani- mously opposed any income tax legis- lation for the District of Columbia, at its meeting held in the Washing- ton Club. A resolution, introduced by Miss Etta L. Taggart, disapproved any local income tax “for property owners and residents of the District.” Another resolution was adopted ap- proving the so-called modified plan for a municipal center as proposed by the District Commissioners. Jesse C. Suter, honorary president of the society, who introduced the resolu- tion, said additional wishes of the Commissioners now embody the eventual conversion of the District Supreme Court Building into a civic center. The building, he pointed out, formerly was the old City Hall here, and its historical background would make it ideal as a place for civic ac- tivities, he said, Recreation Center Favored. ‘The society authorized its Executive Committee to act on a proposal by organization in the Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights sections for the District to acquire property east of Sixteenth street and bordering on Lamont street and Hiatt place, in the vicinity of Powell Junior High School, for a recreational center. It was voted at the meeting to hold the annual dinner of the society “on or about April 25.” The Executive Committee was authorized to select definitely the time and place. Harrison E. Howe, editor of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, delivered an address on “Mysteries of Modern Chemistry for the Layman,” relating how various chemical compounds have been used to make many articles for daily use. In a way, he told the society, it is part of the duty of a research expert to keep persons a little dissatisfled with the things they have and try to supplant modern day articles with something else beuer and more useful. Entertainment Offered. A program of entertainment was presented, including recitations by Mrs. Helen Webb Zeller; vocal selec- tions by the McKinley High School Quartet, consisting of Kenneth Mul- lins, Norman Beard, Frank E. Num- bers and Marvin G. Fisher, under direction of Mrs. B. B. Thompson, and instrumental music, song num- ! bers and acting by Robert Armstrong, William Zeller and Jack Rakestraw, students at Taft Junior High School. Mrs. Watson V. The most primitive people on earth, the native tribes of Australia, were described by Dr. Marie Bentivoglio, noted Australian author and scientist, at the meeting of the National Geo- graphic Society at Constitution Hall last night. Dr. Bentivoglio said thess tribes still make their own weapons out of chipped stone and otherwise live the lives of people in the Stone Age. She also called attention to the rapid progress of Australia under the de- velopment of the white man. The lecture was illustrated by mov- ing pictures and lantern slides to show the native activities of the tribes in camp and on the march. —— DR. JOHN P.
