(The following review of the weck’s live stock activitics was pre- Pared especially for the Associated Press by the United States Depart- ment of Agriculture.) By the Associated Press CHICAGO, March 16.—An unsat- isfactory wade on live stock this week was traced to several underlying causes, principally nerrow dressed outlet. The Lenten season now in progress, together with the fact that all meat is selling at high prices from the consumers’ standpoint and ex- panded receipts all worked toward | the same end—lower live prices. How- ever, better grade steers and yearlings | by virtue of scarcity managed to hold | their own, and, in fact, worked higher. Unfinished steers and yearlings, comparatively close to the better grades and at new high levels for the season early this week, gradually | encountered pressure. This increased the spread and only a comparative | handful of well finished cattle got de- | | pendable support as the week closed. | ?|In a general way. the lighter and the thinner steers were, the harder it was ' for salesmen to get satisfactory action. | Losses ran up to 50 cents in instances | on thin, little steers not suited for | the country. There was a veritable flood of Colorado fed | lambs on sale, taxing the market be- yond capacity. According to a recent | survey. only about 860,000 lambs re- on March 9 this year against 940.000 a year earlier. The fact that Colorado lambs are moving earlier than usual this year with fewer left in the feed lots is promising. There is a decrease of new crop lambs in Southeastern States this year, but the crop as a whole is about 2 per cent larger than 1934, according to a Government sur- vey. In California the crop is from |5 to 10 per cent larger. Late this ging 1456 | § Auto Production Advances in Week To 97,090 Level By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 16.—The cot- ton futures market threaded its wa through an irregular recovery th week after suffering on Monday the most violent break in more than seven years. Values tumbled from $8 to $9.35 a bale before the selling movement ran its course. When it did, prices snapped back $3.75 to $5.75 from the extreme lows. During much of the week price movements were nervous and irregu- lar despite some reassuring advices from Washington that Government crop-control policies would be con- tinued Confidence was disturbed by the sharpness of the decline, which had carried May contracts off from 12.28 on the previous Friday down to 10.2: That position later rallied to 11.35 and | closed yesterday at 11.17, with the general market showing losses of 111 to 143 points for the week No definite news development was attached to the decline.
