H.0.L.C. MEASURE PASSED BY HOUSE Goes to Senate—Provides $1,750,000,000 for Home Owners. By the Assoclated Press. After defeating repeated attempts to raise the fund to $3,000,000,000, the House yesterday sent to the Sen- ate the bill which provides an addi- tional $1,750,000,000 for the Home ‘Owners’ Loan Corp. to help mortgage- burdened home owners. Only two dissenting votes were cast as the House passed the measure after hearing members of the Banking Committee give assurance that the bill provided sufficient funds to help deserving home owners in distress. $250,000,000 Added. Even so the committee itself had added $250,000,000 to the $1,500,000,- 000 originally in the measure. It also wrote in a provision that new applica- | tions for help might be filed for 60 | days after the bill becomes law. Only eight of two score amend- ments were accepted. One of the last edopted boosted from $25.000 to $50,000 the limit on loans—insured | up to 20 per cent by the Federal Housing Administration—made by pri- ’ vate lending agencies for repair and | improvement of commercial structures. | Opposes Section. \ Asserting that if the Government | guaranteed these loans $200,000 000 | would be handed the bankers of the | country, Representative Hancock, Democrat, of North Carolina demand- | ed the entire section covering them | be lifted out of the bill. | The $200,000,000 is the amount pro- | vided in the housing act for modern- ization loans on homes. While they made a last-minute at- tempt to shunt the measure back to the Banking Committee, the Repub- lican opposition to the bill dwindled down to Representatives Andrews of New York and Merritt of Connecticut. REYNOLDS FAMILY JOIN LIBBY IN CASEi Opposes Smith's First Wife's| Claim for More of Tobacco Fortune. | By the Associated Press. WINSTON-SALEM, N. C., March 13.—Members of the millionaire Rey- nolds family joined with Libby Hol- ' man today against the efforts of Anne Cannon Reynolds Smith, divorced wife | of Smith Reynolds, to obtain for her| daughter the $30,000,000 estate of the tobacco heir, who died from a pistol | wound in 1932. The record showed Will N. Reynolds, ‘ noted sportsman, united with the | brother and sisters of young Reynolds in standing by a family settlement | which would give 25 per cent of the | vast fortune to Christopher, the 2 year-old son of Libby Holman Rey. nolds. Reynolds’ affidavit was among the | last submitted to Judge Clayton | Moore before arguments were in order on the family offer to settle 37 cent of the estate upon Anne, old offspring of his first marriage; 25 per cent upon Christopher, and 371, | per cent for creation of a benevolent | foundation. | The affidavit of W. N. Reynolds con- tradicted assertions by Mrs. Smith that she still loved young Reynolds when she divorced him and that she | received affectionate letters from him after they had separated. Reynolds attested his nephew had declined to live with his first wife after a few weeks and had refused to recognize any obligation to contribute to her support or to the support of her daughter.
