Fl U.S. BONDS GAIN. OTHERS G0 DOW Federal Obligations Climb 4 as Much as Half Point in Active Dealings. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 13.—United States Government issues mustered some support and made moderate gains, but other sections of the domes- tic bond list continued to work lower today. Following a featureless start the Federals attracted an increasing num- ber of bids, which resulted in advances ranging up to ' point by the start of the last hour. Treasury 3%s of 1940- 43, 3'is of 1941 and 4%-3%s were leaders in the movement. Rails and utilities were hardest hit by the selling in_the corporate group. In a few issues®lack of support re- sulted in wide breaks. This was true of Columbia Gas & Electric 5s, which fell 35 points to 71%. While pressure was heaviest on the secondary rat- ings, some of the low-yield bonds also slid off fractions to a point. Losses in the semi-speculative loans ranged up to 2 points and rails were the weakest of lhc lot. Washmgton Exchange AFTER CALL. Capital Transit Co—5 at 23. Liberty Nationa! Bank—8 at 85. By the Associated Press. | NEW YORK, March 13.—Resuming | the decline arrested a week ago. steel operations have receded to 47); per cent of capacity from 48!, per cent, | said Iron Age today in its weekly | summary. The review asserted that steel buy- | ing for the second quarter, aside from @ brief spurt early this month, has been desultory, and added that “it is becoming increasingly evident that the needs of the automotive industry, so conspicuous a few weeks ago, are no longer urgent.” “Light flat rolled steel production,” continued the summary, “is holding at a high rate, with tin plate and sheet mill operations averaging 75 per cent | of capacity. | “Makers of full-finished sheets are booked full for the remainder of this month and some of them have good commitments for April, but few steel producers have accumulated enough forward tonnage to forestall a sharp - reduction in their backlogs with the | arrival of the first quarter shipping deadiine on March 31. “Though the decline in the demand from the motor car makers is now at- tributed to inventory accumulations | rather than to a downward revision of production programs, the lack of interest among other classes of buyers is bluntly ascribed to political uncer- tainties. “Current gestures threatening the abolition of N. R. A, or at least all | forms of price control, have accentu- | ated caution among buyers. “Encouraging factors are a gain in the volume of steel orders from mak- ers of household equipment, & sus- tained flow of business from the farm equipment and tractor industry, the placing of additional rail orders and the early maturity of a number of large pending public projects. “Scrap, though lethargic in most markets, has lost further ground at Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and the Iron Age scrap composite has receded frem $11.50 to $11.17 a ton " xira fancy, 2.00a Ro: Sbinisbrative and 5: C grade.
